101-Adjacent Mixed-User Bringing Big Change to Hollywood/Western Zone

Quote:
The little corner of Hollywood around Hollywood and Western is changing quite a bit lately, with one fancy mixed-user, plus a boutiquey hotel in the works just a couple of blocks away. But the whole area should really start to transform with this new project on the boards for a spot at 5750 Hollywood (at Taft) now housing a large, empty, commercial space, says Building LA. The retail-and-residential development will be just off the 101 Freeway—not Geoff-Palmer-fauxtalian-fortress close, but almost, separated from the busy freeway only by an auto repair shop.

Designed by the firm Carrier Johnson + Culture, the building's contrasting materials (metal panels, ceramic tiles, projecting balconies) and alternating stretches of white and black are all meant to "provide visual references to Hollywood's filmmaking heritage," says the environmental report.

Rising seven stories, 5750 Hollywood would hold 161 units, 5,700 square feet of street-level retail, and parking for 271 cars and 96 bicycles.

Major Upgrade For Union Station Bus Riders Starts Soon

Quote:
Metro will begin work in April on a new super-bus-station at Union Station that will create a direct link between the El Monte Busway and the station. As it stands now, riders of the Silver Line and Foothill buses that use the busway are dropped off on Alameda Street and face a quarter mile walk on a busy street to make a connection; the new station will allow passengers to alight directly off the busway and take an elevated walkway right inside. As reported by Building Los Angeles, the project also includes a "wind bridge" designed by artist Ned Kahn, which will be a "500-foot long structure ... adorned with perforated aluminum panels, arranged to 'move with the wind, resulting in complex rippling patterns of light and shade created by sunlight penetrating in between the two layers of perforated metal.'"

The Beverly Hills Waldorf Astoria is now under construction. 12-stories, 170 guest rooms, luxury retail. Designed by Gensler and Pierre-Yves Rochon.

Another part of town booming with construction!

I like the look of this. Reminds me of the Burton a bit and is very appropriate for the area. The west side could use a whole lot of redevelopment of crappy strip malls and horrible architecture honestly

The old Waldorf Astoria plans were far superior and ambitious.

Also, is the Hilton remaining a Hilton?

Here are probably the last pics we'll see of Macys Plaza before the roof is torn off.

Some new Fig Central renders. Probably the biggest game-changer happening in the most important neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Fig Central, Wilshire Grand and Metropolis will change the look of downtown for years. I visited LA quite a few times when my father used to work there and remember Ritz being the only new tower around.

I was just thinking the same about Fig Central, Wilshire Grand, and Metropolis. They will really change the look of the southern part of downtown.

We now have 2 projects at this intersection, though the one closest to camera is infinitely better than the 7-story:

This week is looking pretty good for low-rise/mid-rise groundbreakings. The northern half of Palmer's Broadway Palace site is now fenced off, with site prep underway.

Shovels finally hit dirt for the mixed-use development next to Vibiana (Holland Partner Group, 237 apartments, 4,000 sq. ft. retail, designed by Togawa Smith martin)

I feel sorry for the tenants who have to share this beautiful building now desecrated by some disrespectful students. I'm not against schools for having downtown locations, but I wish they would have their own buildings. DTLA is full of parking lots begging for infill.
