I wouldn't trust those "delay" or "speed" figures on Dutch traffic information anyway. I often had a delay that was 10 minutes according to traffic info, but was usually longer, up to an hour. They especially don't know how to translate the delay when there's a road closure. They say "more than 20 minutes delay", but that can easily be a couple of hours. Also, a short traffic jam length is not a guarantee that your delay is short too. It took me an hour to cover 5 km on the A28 once.

If you're so negative about the traffic situation in Holland, Chris (which has actually slowly been getting better for the past 10 years), why don't you take the train for once?

1) The traffic has not been better over the last 10 years. 2008 was the first year with a small decrease in traffic jams, but 2005, 2006 and 2007 showed a 10+ % annual increase in traffic jams, which means the 2% decrease is still offset by a 30% increase over the last couple of years, hence, the current situation is still 28% worse than in 2005. Traffic jams also increased before 2005, with 2002 also being a dip due to the economic situation back then.

2) I used to take the train quite a lot, at least once every week. But now I have a car, and the journey take me half the amount of time, do you think I'm stupid wasting my time in the train?

Nice pictures, Chris!

They should build more expressway roads like the N201 in that area.

The Randstad is kinda weird, it's a conurbation of over 7 million people, hence you usually only have the choice between a crowded freeway, or some at-grade, through-villages, traffic-light/roundabout-ridden provincial roads. There is nearly nothing in between, which is one of the reasons why the Randstad is such a mess. I think it's ridiculous to have 500 - 600 kilometers of traffic jam in an urban area of 7 million. (TomTom traffic info). Even New York or Los Angeles don't have that much traffic jam length.

Wasn't the N201 originally planned as the A80? (Hoofddorp-Hilversum)

No, thank god not.

The first reports about traffic jams from this year indicate the small decrease of traffic jams last year was only temporary. The first three weeks of Februari had 14% more traffic jams than last year. A bit small period, but it's an indication.

I was in the town of Emmeloord today, and had two hours off between to surveys, so time to make some pictures.

First, Emmeloord is a very picturesque city, almost like Amsterdam (sense the irony)

1. Stacked sign in Tollebeek, you don't see this often in NL.

2. Remarkable city-limit sign. First, it's made into an internet adress, probably loosing it's legal status. Second, a Belgium-style sister-city city limit sign is added. This sign is probably the most touristic spot in Tollebeek.

A6 motorway from viaducts

3. From the Lemsterpad viaduct in Lemmer, at the border of Flevoland and Friesland provinces. Looking south.

4. Zoomed in to the south, rest area is visible.

5. The northbound signage for exit Lemmer.

6. Ruttenseweg viaduct, looking north.

7. Still looking north, notice the wide median.

8. Looking south, they planted a small forest in the median.

9. N715 exit, with the new U-signage.

10. N715 overpass, looking south.

11. Looking north, signage for a rest area.

12. Anybody need a house?

13. N351 exit, Emmeloord-North, looking northbound.

14. Looking south to interchange Emmeloord (A6/N50)

15. Nagelerweg overpass near Emmeloord. Looking eastbound at interchange Emmeloord. Traffic from N50 merges from the left here.

16. A closer look at the lanes.

17. A look in the southwest direction.

18. Zuidwesterringweg overpass, looking south at the Texaco gas station. Notice there was a gas station like 15 kilometers earlier in the SB direction.

19. Rest area "Han Stijkel", who the hell invents those names?

20. ANWB, the Dutch roadside assistance organization. I took this picture on my way to a Cypriotic truck I saw earlier, but it was gone The second time I ever saw a truck from Cyprus.

Thanks for the pictures, Chris. The A6 looks nice, it kind of reminds me of the F5 freeway here. What's the speed limit on that part of it, 120 km/h?

Yes, it's 120 km/h, except for a short section in and around interchange Emmeloord, due to the somewhat tight curves you have to take to follow A6.

Will that interchange ever be rebuild? Right now you still have to TOTSO.
