Here's a little update on the A2 construction between Amsterdam and Utrecht:

Pictures taken today, sadly it rained and I had loads of bugs on my windshield

The journey starts at the A9 coming from the direction Alkmaar and following the signs in the direction of Utrecht and ends at the exit Hooggelegen / Utrecht.

The A2 widening and reconstruction of this part of the A2 should be finished in 2010. Currently there's still a lot of construction going on and only the part between Maarssen and exit Lage Weide is almost done. Northbound a part of the separate transit and local traffic roads is already in use.

Part 1:

1 & 2. Knooppunt Holendrecht A9/A2

3.

4. A2, exit Abcoude to the right.

5. Merge onto the A2:

6.

7. The right lane of the A9-A2 connection becomes exit Abcoude

8.

9. New overpass

10.

11. Exit Vinkeveen

12. New bridge after exit Vinkeveen

13.

14.

15.

16.

17.

18.

19. In the future transit and local traffic will be separated here. 3 lanes transit on the left and 2 lanes local on the right.

20. Driving on the future parallel road for local traffic near exit Maarssen.

21. Old A2

22.

23. Exit Hooggelegen / Utrecht Center coming up

24. Exit Hooggelegen (warning tight corner!)

25. Temporary exit Hooggelegen

26. Temporary exit Hooggelegen

27. Hooggelegen

28. Standing on a new bridge over the A2 ready to go back to Amsterdam. In the distance the bridge over the Amsterdam - Rijnkanaal that leads road traffic into the city of Utrecht.

Very nice Des!

I gotta say the signage near IC Oudenrijn is a bit "hmmm"...

Pretty much the whole A2 from Amsterdam to Eindhoven will be widened and around the big cities (Utrecht, Den Bosch and Eindhoven) local traffic will be separated from transit traffic.

http://maps.google.nl/maps?f=d&sourc...34589&t=h&z=10

Other roads that will be widened:

A1 Muiderberg - Diemen (Currently highly congested even with the carpool lane that opens in the busiest direction. The 2x3 serves as the only road to Amsterdam for people living in Almere, Lelystad and the Hilversum area. In the future this should be widened to 2x5 and include a new tunnel on the vecht river near Muiden.

A4 Burgerveen - Leiden (all remaining 2x2 bits will be widened to 2x3 and later probably 2x4, this includes a new tunnel near Burgerveen and a landtunnel to reduce noise and polution near Leiderdorp/Hoogmade.

A9 Knooppunt Holendrecht - Badhoeverdorp (From the intersection with the A2 to the intersection with the A4 the current 2x3 will be widened to 2x4 and near Amstelveen a tunnel will be build. Near Badhoeverdorp the continueing A9 will be moved around Badhoeverdorp so like Amstelveen it doesn't split the city in two parts anymore)

A10 Knooppunt Diemen - Knooppunt Nieuwe Meer (There's still discussion about this part, one of the alternatives is to widen the A9 tru Amsterdam Southeast and keep the A10 2x3 wide on this section. Others suggest to widen the southern part of the A10 from the A1 connection to the A4 connection to 2x4.)

A10 A5 Connection - A8 connection = 2e coentunnel (The coentunnel that connects Amsterdam and Zaandam underneath the North Sea channel is one of the most congested roads in the Netherlands. The 2x2 tunnel was build long time ago and an alternative is needed badly. In 2012 the new tunnel should be build then the A10 should have 3 permanent lanes in each direction and 2 additional rush hour lanes that can be changed depending on the demand. On both sides of the tunnel a spaghetti of lanes and roads are expected, on the south side connecting to the A5 to Schiphol and on the north side connecting to the A8 to Zaandam.)

A12 Utrecht - Arnhem (parts of the 2x2 network will be widened to 2x3 or 2x4, some parts will only have additional rush hour lanes that won't be open all day)

Apart from the roads I mentioned above there's a lot more plans for the remaining bit of the A1, A27, A28 etc.

New roads:

A5 connects the existing A5 with the new second Coentunnel in the A10. Will be 2x2 to start with.

the carpool lane
That lane between IC Muiderberg and IC Diemen only served as a carpool lane for a few months in the 90's. It was then turned into a general traffic reversible lane.

Personally, I think one lane reversible lanes are a waste. With a reconfiguration of shoulders and lanes, you could fit two regular lanes in the same alignment (2x4 instead of 3+1+3). Because reversibles are stand-alone lanes physically separated from the main lanes, they need more space. So I think it's only useful if you have at least 2 reversible lanes.

Some interesting news; transport minister Eurlings has officially started the construction of the second Coen Tunnel in the A10 ringroad in Amsterdam. The tunnel will be widened from 4 to 8 lanes.

Totally agree!

First bit of 2x5 between Amsterdam and Utrecht:

I think they will be revealed or added once the other carriageway is put into service.

If they would add the arrows now (all five), than the sign would say that the northbound lanes are for southbound traffic Tape can solve this problem though

I've seen in De Volkskrant today that they had decided to build the missing part of the A4 between Delft and Schiedam through Midden-Delftland. The works should start in 2011 and the road is supposed to be open for traffic in 2015. Let's hope so.

They went with the 880 million euro plan that will tunnel underneath the 'precious' nature reserve area. Insanity.
