we did the same with M7 8 years ago: it was widened to 2+3 between Budapest and székesfehérvár...

I think the reason is the following:
the summer weekend traffic toward the balaton is between friday afternoon and saturday morning... so there is not so high peak, 2 lanes is enough...

but the traffic back to budapest on sunday afternoon and evening is very high, and the 3lanes help a lot...

It's probably also because it's more important that you're not late for work (or that you don't have to wake up too early) than to be home a few minutes later.

A big accident on A15 near RotterJAM! 187 kilometers of traffic jam in metropolitan Rotterdam right now.

And if you thought it's only metro-Randstad, you're wrong, some 120 kilometers of traffic jam around ArnJAM!

The top list: (delay times are highly inaccurate btw) The whole list lists 191 traffic jams, 686 km. TomTom HD TRAFFIC

Interesting, a new urban development near Utrecht (Rijnenburg) has been downsized from 14.000 to 7.000 homes because traffic would be too bad with 14.000 homes. Given the fact Utrecht is already one big traffic mess, the additional 7.000 homes will add up to that. I believe it's one of the first times a housing project is downsized due to traffic issues.

Coldplay is giving concerts in Nijmegen, which is a city in eastern Netherlands. Normally, rush hour can be pretty bad around Arnhem-Nijmegen, but because of the concerts it was an absolute mess.

The concert was to start at 9 pm, but gridlock already appeared 6 hours in advance. Some fans were only able to catch the last 30 minutes of the concert because they were sitting in traffic for several hours.

Right now, the entire region of Arnhem-Nijmegen is gridlocked again with 125 kilometers of traffic jam due to rush hour + the Coldplay concert. We're talking about a 25 km radius here.

This is the domain of public transport, dear Chris/Verso/H123.

Cars where there are too few trains, trains where there are too many cars

Surely not. But if until now I resisted to reply to these news, the news about Coldpaly's concert remembed me a document I have read about the management of the crowd and transport during big sport or cultural events, written by some engineer of Lausanne's university. But you are lucky, I don't remember where I have it. This said, end of the discussion, at least on this thread

Some pics of the newly reconstructed interchange Lankhorst (Gmaps)

The mainline lanes opened in 1969 and the interchange itself opened in 1979 (it used to end at Meppel-Zuid). Today, the new connector lanes for Meppel - Hoogeveen and vice versa opened. Of course, I just had to go there.

1. southbound. Southern terminus of A32.

2. Entering the new connector ramp.

3. Looking south A28

4. I drive too fast. Speed limit in this ramp is 50 km/h due to the tight curve.

5. Making a giant U-turn.

6. Merging with A28 northbound traffic (actually eastbound here)

7. A28 southbound, from the other direction.

8. What's weird is the lack of overhead signs. It might be the only interchange that doesn't have overheads.

9. The new ramp from Hoogeveen towards Meppel (A32 north)

Accident on the A10 near the Zuidas district in Amsterdam this afternoon (+/- 11:30am). I was sitting in the train and saw a few police cars and some other cars. Only 1 lane available after that! And a bit further only 2 lanes It was a long traffic jam, all the way to Schiphol.

Don't tell me that, I wouldn't go to such a concert in the Netherlands by car. But if I'm already by car, I don't wanna pay additional money for a car train (like by Gotthard). I always went to Switzerland by car, because I drove around Switzerland much and because I never went alone anyway (which is cheaper than buying 2 or 3 train tickets).

The personal website of one of the engineers I spoke about: http://www.mobility-bovy.ch/publication/page1.html

It has some PDF files about transport in great events.

==================================

The "search" function of SSC doesn't work well. There is a website about the A4? The missing parts seem to be interesting with a lot of tunnels/bridges...

special: bike racks

Dutch and their bikes. It's like a synonym, the flat topography, short distances and good bike infrastructure have led to a high bicycle mobility.

These pictures were taken on the A28 motorway between Zwolle and Amersfoort, a distance of approximatly 50 kilometers. Most of these people with bike racks are retired people who want to take a cycling tour in the woods. Pics taken around 11 am.

They can be annoying, since many of these people drive 100 km/h on the left lane or even slower on the right lane (causing many trucks to overtake these guys)

A 100km/h? Why? You can easily do 130 with bicycles on the back, I always drive 130.

Yeah, your speedometer says 130, so in reality you drive 125. The police won't fine you when you drive 125, because there is a certain percentage that you can drive above the speed limit before you get fined. All combined 130 sounds fine

Small update from the N36 Ommen bypass. Not much has changed since my May visit, because of summer vacation. The biggest accomplishment is the construction of the N36-N48 roundabout.

Frankly, I think this project sucks. It's nice to have an Ommen bypass, but should've been build grade-separated and at least 2+1. Now it will be 2x1 without overtaking possibilities. And the preceding N340 is already a pain in the ass road with a lot of slowpokes and trucks. The Raalte - Hoogeveen free-flowing route will also be interrupted with a roundabout. This is called "progress"

project:

Een update.

1. Wat grapjassen zijn hier bezig geweest. 1km is 1 m geworden en Ommer kanaal is Ommen anaal geworden. :rofl2:
