Well, A4 will be constructed in a land tunnel through Schiedam (where the area has always been kept open for construction). Tunnel regulations do not allow merging lanes inside, or 10 seconds from a tunnel, so they have to extend the merging lane from A20 all the way until Delft, which means there are basically 3 lanes northbound.

Personally, I think these tunnel regulations are a perfect example of the overregulation that exists in this country. Other countries have complete interchange underground (Switzerland for example), but we can't even have a merging lane inside a tunnel.

So these regulations oblige to have three lanes northbound; but don't limit the soutbound ones to two? I always read of traffic jams, so I'm surprised that they will build two lanes, and not three, southbound.

Well, realistically, they should make this thing 8 lanes right away. The area is growing like crazy, with a lot of cities adding residential developments. The estimated AADT for the Rotterdam - The Hague corridor are over 300,000 by 2020, and studies have shown transit improvements are likely to shave that off by 0 - 1%, so they really have to build a good one.

If they are smart, they build this tunnel with additional space reservation, damn, I would demand that for a freaking € 900 million for 7 km of motorway! The road authority already possess all lands, and they do not have to expropriate a single object.

Perhaps for the same reason a 4% grade would be signaled as "steep climbing" here

@ Chris:

Do you have a map (or know where I can find one) with the AADT for the most busy Dutch highways?

There is no map, but there is an excel file which lists every road section. You can download it here (XLS)

Finally A4 will be built But why it is so expensive?

What about A4 south of Schiedam (missing link between A15 and A29) ??

Not likely in the near future, and not really necessary as well. This connection would require two bridges or tunnels, and the detour route via A15 and A29 is only 10 kilometers longer.

Besides that, widening of A15 to 2x5 lanes will start in 2011.

IC Holendrecht - IC Diemen
construction of a land tunnel between 10.2 and 7.2 (3km)
widening from 2x2 => 2x2+1+ 2 shoulder running lanes (7 lanes total)

A10
IC Amstel - IC Watergraafsmeer
widening from 2x3 => 2x4 lanes plus additional weaving lanes
construction of a bus lane inside IC Watergraafsmeer

A1
IC Watergraafsmeer - IC Diemen
widening from 2x3 => 2x4 lanes plus additional weaving lanes, up to 11 lanes total.

IC Diemen - IC Muiderberg
widening from 2x3+1 to 2x5+2 (up to 14 lanes approaching interchanges)

A6
IC Muiderberg - Almere
widening from 2x3 to a total of 11 lanes (4 roadways)

It will be going from 18 to 12 lanes, then to 14 lanes in 7 km. There are 2x5 lanes plus two reversible lanes in through lanes, and also a two-lane busway.

This road will also feature the world's widest aqueduct at 14 lanes and 4 shoulders.

Visualization of the future A1 aqueduct near Muiden. At 14 lanes, this will be the world's widest aqueduct. The estimated AADT for 2020 is 310,000 vehicles per day.

Chris, what are those 2 centermost lanes? Reversible or bus-exclusive?

Those are reversible lanes. The two rightmost lanes are bus lanes.

I made a map based on several EIS documents which give 2020 traffic volumes.

wow . We still have a lot to do, to handle these amounts of traffic.
A nice upgrade though for the highways around Amsterdam
