Newest version!

It is also simplified. Uneven lane counts are rounded off downwards (4+5 becomes 2x4).

There really ought to be a highway between Almelo and Zwolle. The current situation not only splits the province of Overijssel, but also 'forces' people from Twente who wish to go to Groningen to go through Germany (which is the fastest option).

The two largest cities of Overijssel province are not connected by any high-standard road. The N35 is a single lane narrow highway not designed for fast traffic. Passing is banned throughout its length and the quality of flow is very poor especially Zwolle - Heino - Raalte and Nijverdal - Almelo. The 20 km commute from Raalte to Zwolle usually takes 30 - 40 minutes, which means the average speed is lower than 50 km/h.

The traffic counts on the middle section of N35 are not particularly high (around 12.000 vehicles per day). However, the actual demand of this road is underestimated, because people follow various routes from Zwolle to Enschede;

* N35 (direct route)
* N35 - N332 - A1 (bypasses Nijverdal)
* N340 - N36 (via Ommen)
* A50 - A28 (motorway route, 80% longer, but equally fast)

It depends on which area in Zwolle you have to be. If it is close to the A28 motorway (like downtown and the north), the motorway route is the best option, even though it is significantly longer. If you have to be in the Hessenpoort industrial area in the east, the route via Ommen is quicker. If you're coming from the southern half, you can choose between N35 direct route or N332-A1 bypassing Nijverdal.

The highest traffic counts on the single-lane section of N35 is 25.000 vehicles per day south of Zwolle and in Nijverdal.

For trucks, that mean they are banned from using this short route on Sundays

Im surprised that the motorways in Flevoland don't have 3 lanes.

I mean, what's the problem if the only motorway between those two cities runs through Germany?

A6 is being upgraded in the future to something like 12-14 lanes between A1 and the N-road that serves as the ring road for Almere, after that it'll run through the length of Almere as 8 lanes local-express highway. After Almere there's no need for more than 4 lanes I believe, traffic volumes aren't that high there. Maybe A27 between A6 and A1 could do with 6 lanes

Great maps! Awesome work, Chris.

Are the 2006 data the latest data for traffic volume?

Great map Chris! Do you think you can make a map like that for Germany if you have some spare time?

Ah excellent, that's good to know, thanks!

I figured it had to be day. After I typed "year" in my previous post, I thought to myself "Year? If that's true I have to buy a car and cruise around"
