What kind of technology is used to make such kind of measurements?

Speed trap system? But how about the house district? Then some GPS/GSM based tracking built in the navigation devices? Like the Tom Tom live services?

You are an insider so I have a question. Is Tom Tom constantly logging the possition and speed, date etc. data in the machine, and then when connected through computer and tom tom home online does he send these logs to the parent company? Or the only data that are coming are only through the tom tom live via GSM?

as i understood...

Speed is measured from all devises.. Not only the 'live' versions.

I am just a mapping nerd...

TomTom also records cell phone movement in order to calculate traffic jams and delays, right?

they used to.. I dont think they use it anymore.... I will ask...

TomTom's HD Traffic system takes a three-pronged approach, taking advantage of road sensor data, IQ Routes time-based predictive traffic flow data generated anonymously by the millions of TomTom device and app users, and real time traffic data generated by users and fleets equipped with connected TomTom devices. All of this data is blended using a proprietary algorithm at TomTom's traffic center to create what TomTom calls the most up-to-the-minute and accurate view of what's happening on the road.

Yesterday around 15.00 hours a large fire broke out at a chemical processing plant in the Moerdijk industrial area (south of Dordrecht). Fire department couldn't get it under control for hours, and between 22.30 and 03.30 hours both A16 and A17 were closed to all traffic due to toxic clouds coming from the factory. It was said this was the largest fire in the Netherlands in a decade.

Motorway segments with more than 75.000 vehicles per day in the Netherlands. All of these segments should have 6 lanes or more. Unfortunately, many of these sections are still 2x2 lanes, though the situation is improving dramatically.

Infrastructure corridor:

Left: A16 Motorway
Center: High Speed Rail
Right: Conventional Rail

Just south of the Moerdijk Bridges.

You van see the old 'postweg' (postroad) from Breda to Moerdijk in the diagonal of this picture. The buildings in the middle were located at this road and are now quite isolated.

What happened last Friday? Almost no traffic jams in the NL. I was driving from Eindhoven to Groningen after work (around 16:45) and I took me 2.15h (255 km)! Super! 3 lines on A28 between Zwolle and Meppel and no jams
What is the reason opposite direction will get 3 lines in May 2011 despite new lane is already built??

This past week was very quiet on the roads. Many people are working, but also many people still have vacation. Another reason is that January and February tend to be used by employees to spend their left-over vacation days from the year before. Traffic volumes in January and February are typically 10 - 15% lower than in other months.
