A2/A76 interchange Kerensheide

The construction of a new fly-over commenced today at interchange Kerensheide near Geleen, where A2 crosses A76. The new fly-over will be put in operation in 2013.

Is so busy there to built such a flyover? I was many times and drive in direction of new flyover but never seen much traffic. Actually I am always after 5.p.m or Saturday mornings.
BTW, could anyone tell me what kind of industry is located there (left top side of the picture)?

Approximately half of all A2 traffic is to and from Heerlen, so it is a major exiting traffic flow. It should've been a cloverturbine but this is a nice solution as well.

Chemelot, also known as DSM, an ex-mining facility, currently a major petrochemical plant.

But how would you deal with the capacity constraint over there? A50 is an important route, and that old bridge (which will stay in place, btw) cannot carry traffic much longer without massive daily jams.

This bridge is the 5th worst bottleneck in the Netherlands. It jumped from 32rd place in 2009 to 5th in 2010.

2009: 74220 km-min
2010: 189403 km-min

A km-min (kilometer minute) is the amount of minutes at least 1 kilometer of traffic jam existed. In 2010, there were 189,403 minutes, or 3,157 hours or 131 consecutive days 1 kilometer of traffic jam existed.

Only have two (much taller) pylons in the middle to support the road rather than two (small) additional ones on either side or have two levels with 2x4 on each floor supported by two pylons in the middle.

That cannot happen without complete rebuilding of the bridge. The current bridge is rather weak, it cannot support shoulder running in the southbound direction for example. Weight is the main problem. Even if the current bridge had space for 8 lanes, it cannot handle the weight of 8 lanes of traffic.

Since demolishing the existing one, and building a new one over a timespan of 3 years is not an option without building a temporary bridge, the current solution is the best.

By the way: Dutch transport minister proposed 4 motor way stretches today where the speed limit could be raised to 130 km/h during the whole day or part of the day only.

This includes:

A7 - Afsluitdijk (complete day starting March 1st)
A6 - Joure - Almere (evening / night starting May 1st)
And also the recently widened A2 and A16.

Can't wait until they make this final. They should test the A32 as well.

Nice pic! A12 is interesting on that initial sector. I just wish they extended A44 up to A12 terminus, forming an "L".

Construction of A74 motorway near Venlo:

Vanaf Egypte kijkend richting Ulingsheide.

Why they don't consider more roads in the provinces is beyond me. Take the A58 in Zeeland, there's never anybody there. Especially in the evening. There are vast stretches where you could do 150km/h at 21:00h and it would be completely safe.

Maybe it's a test-case to show there is no significant impact.

Yeah those are classics. I'm always looking for bridges (pedestrian bridges) that cross highways in urban environments on google maps. That way I plan my phototrips. I like taking pictures of traffic trails at blue hour and a skyline in the distance. Mostly people either like to take pics of highways or skylines. I like both. A highway junction with a skyline in the distance is ultimate satisfaction to me. Too bad we don't have too many of those over here in the Netherlands. I'm going to Knooppunt Kleinpolderplein tonight.

Kidding? This is the way how to make live more complicated.. First remember the dates, then the motorway numbers, then the stretches on that motorway. What about direction? Southbound or northbound on Afsluitdijk ???
Why not apply default by countrywide?
No need to put a lot of speed limits signs along the roads... Legal speed limit could raise and spots with lower speed could still having the same signs...
