Maybe in Dutch it means what Chris thinks it means. Not in English.

Well, if you've got some sort of structure carrying water over a road, I'd call that structure the aqueduct and the road part an underpass. I don't get that last picture: where's the water?

Also, isn't there a Dutch word "waterleiding"? What's that mean?

So do we. Well, I do anyway.

Behind the guy taking the picture. He already passed the aqueduct and took a picture of the new road.

It means a pipe carrying water, like the pipes in your home.

Best is that it's just a sign for all directions to go straight anyway...

I know that one of the directions is for the Erasmus MC hospital, one's for the parking but what's the third one for?

The indication inline with the green square means the "parking area". They would be different, for instance, if indicating "Centrum" and then several parking garages withing that area. Maybe even a Parking Route

N33 Assen - Zuidbroek

The record of decision for the doubling of the N33 to 2x2 lanes for 37 kilometers between Assen and Zuidbroek has been published today. The current N33 is a 1x2 expressway-status road with full grade-separation except for the N34 traffic circle.

The future N33 will feature 2x2 lanes throughout from Assen to Zuidbroek, and the N34 traffic circle will feature an underpass. All grade-separated interchanges remain, effectively making this a 2x2 expressway without shoulders and a 100 km/h speed limit.

The N33 links the A28 with A7 and is useful for traffic to Eastern Groningen and to northwestern Germany. It is not very heavily traveled, with 12.000 to 20.000 vehicles per day. It is however, a traffic hazard with many accidents and fatalities. Another issue is the high share of truck traffic, which impedes the flow of traffic and creates convoys behind slow-moving trucks.

here's the N33 route that will be widened to 2x2 lanes:

This is a sketch of the new Assen-Zuid interchange, with new fly-overs for traffic from Veendam to Hoogeveen and vice versa. (current situation)

This is the design of the Zuidbroek interchange, which will be designed as a "botonde", a bone roundabout or dumbbell interchange. The design has been critized for not being free-flowing.

N31 Leeuwarden bypass

Here's a project map of the N31 Leeuwarden bypass. The project has been secured, the record of decision became irrevocable last year. Preliminary works are underway, with full-scale construction starting in late 2011.

The purple sections will be constructed by Rijkswaterstaat, the national road authority

The pink sections will be constructed by the province of Fryslân

The orange sections will be constructed by the city of Leeuwarden.

This will help a lot with traffic in Leeuwarden. It has a very underdeveloped road network. The current ring road was mostly constructed in de 1950's and is often jammed. I hope there will also be a solution for the North Side of the city in the future as well, for instance a beltway to connect the N31 to the N357 and N355.

Chris, do you know what will happen with the old N31 between Goutum and Marssum? Will the bridge near Deinum be demolished? Or will it be kept as a backup route?

Are you asking about the location of the new aquaduct in Middelburg? It just opened a week ago, so of course it is not on Streetview yet. But here you can find the construction site on Streetview.

That would certainly explain why I can't find it then.

Some more information about the raise of the speed limit to 130 km/h came available.

The blue sections indicate experimental 130 km/h limits, to be implemented in the next few months. The green sections are likely to get 130 km/h limits but will need some more surveying.

Today campaigns for the provincial elections (which are also indirect senate elections) started. The government party VVD (liberal-right) started in Beesd, where the new 130 km/h sign was displayed.

Is the increase in the speed limit a campaign issue? By which I mean are they (the VVD?) expecting it to make a difference by winning them more seats or whatever?
