It was a (minor) campaign issue for the parliament elections in June 2010, in which the VVD became the largest party of the Netherlands for the first time in about a hundred years. I don't think 130 km/h is interesting enough to persuade people to vote for VVD, but it is quite nice not having to receive € 20 fines for doing 126 km/h on the motorway. The Dutch motorway quality is generally impeccable and very well-designed, so if any motorway system in Europe is suited for 130 km/h, it is the Dutch one.

The main issue are the 100 km/h limits in the west though. Minister Schultz is investigating of a dynamic maximum speed (dynamax) can be introduced on more motorways to allow 120 or 130 km/h instead of 100 km/h at more quiet hours.

We have a word for it in Dutch: symboolpolitiek. I guess I don't need to translate that

Hey guys!
I haven't read the entire thread, can you please explain me, why you have these low speeds? I tried searching on google, but didn't find something so conclusive.
Thanks, and sorry, if it was explained before.

Netherlands is a small and densitive country with 16.6 mio inhabitants.
We have a total length 2360 km of highways. Especially in the metropolitan Randstad area (8 mio inhabitants), the maximum speed on the highways is 100km/h. Low speed decreases the air pollution and increases the traffic safety. The Netherlands has one of the safest road network in the EU.

The plans to increase the maximum speed limits with 130 km/h in the Netherlands, doesn't count for the metro Randstad. The Randstad is too much populated comparing with the rest of the country.

I made a bunch of videos today.

Here's the first one; A12 between Utrecht and Gouda.

Incorrect. Maximumspeed on access controlled freeways is 120 km/h (75 mph) in general, but there are far too many parts of the network where the max. speed is lowered to 100 km/h (62 mph) or even 80 km/h (50 mph).

Do you always drive the speed limit or slightly below? I'm just curious to see what the driving discipline of other driviers is.

I usually drive the speed limit, sometimes a little over, sometimes a little under.

What's "Abu Den Haag"?
You say "Dreieck"?
"Slaapverwekkend" = puts you to sleep?
"La stack"? - you made that up, didn't you?

My guesses:

Abu Haag is a reference to Abu Dhabi/UAE (etc.), I guess because of the building projects going on atm.
Dreieck is German for interchange, because our new interchange signage looks exactly like the German one.
La stack, maybe LA stack.

You got slaapverwekkend right though :p

Forgive my ignorance but could someone enlighten me why third-lane closure is practiced in NL (e.g. like this)?
I realise that the third lane comes and goes but why close it in places where it is actually available?

Yes, I was wondering myself what 'slaapverwekkende snelheden' meant.
Sleep-inducing speed or something like that, I guess.

Mostly third-lane is closed on off-peak hours cause in not full width lane.
3rd-lane is more narrow so speed limit is lowered, when that one is open. When additional lane is closed speed limit is higher und users can more enjoy the driving Am I correct? :-)

It's amazing how Google translate manage this. It actually translated "Dit is toch wel andere koek dan Zwolle." in "This is quite different story than Zwolle.". I would expect something like "This is different cake than Zwolle"
