Yup...It can spoil a sunny day in winter time. The winter sun really has trouble breaking trough that kind of fog...

It's a shame the numbers are not placed at the baceline of the signs, but apart from that, NBA finally seems to have found its way!

It does make the situation at this interchange much and much clearer!

Now you know why so many Dutch emigrated to Australia back in the 1950's, it resembles so much from Dutchland!

This is the Dutch outback. The bicycle path gives it away, otherwise you'd believe this is in Australia.

There are still gravel roads in the Netherlands? What is it, the third world?

Edit: Joking, btw...

I believe this is National Park "de Hoge Veluwe" , one of the largest continuous nature reserves in the Netherlands!

I don't believe there is a unpaved main road to be found in the Netherlands, there are some unpaved rural roads, moastly near or in woodlands

Dogback? If you insist on translating "Hondsrug", I'd say "Dog's Ridge" or "Hunze Ridge".

We have a habit of using unpaved roads as tourist attractions. Especially in nature reserve areas like the Veluwe, but also along the coastlines of Zealand. In the example of Zealand, the tourists (about 85% of them from the very urban German Ruhr area) arrive on the motorway, onto an expressway which turns into a regular small road and then a few km before the beaches, the road sort of just... stops. It turns into a gravel road and you park your car in a field. This was done on purpose to add to the experience and most tourists seem to like it.

Yes I do. Below is the area I used to go to the beach when I still lived in Zeeland (until 2002). Dishoek road and the roads in Vebenabos are an odd mix of asphalt and gravel. Parking in this area is almost exclusive on gravel and grass. "Strand Koudekerke" and "Westduin" are pedestrian and bicycle roads that are usually tiled but partly just sand.

A year and a half ago, the area was changed completely due to the upgrade of coastal defences (it was a so called zwakke schakel) so I don't know if it's still the traditional web of gravel and a asphalt roads. But that type of situation was quite common in Zeeland throughout the 1980s and 1990s and to a lesser extent the noughties.

A27 Utrecht

The final record of decision for the widening of A27 in the northbound direction has been published today. The northbound carriageway will be widened from 4 to 6 lanes. The connector lane from A12 to A27 (W > N) and from A27 to A28 (N > E) will be widened from 2 to 3 lanes.

This is a short-term measure that will be implemented in 2011. The A27 will be widened to 14 lanes in 2020.

Does anyone know if the N50 between Kampen and Ens is going to become 2x2?

Likely not anytime soon. It's not really that necessary either, plus it would be too expensive to construct a second IJssel River Bridge. A solution could be the French way; construct the entire route 2x2, except the IJssel River crossing to save money.

The N50 is currently divided into 5 sections:

* Interchange Hattemerbroek - Kampen-Zuid: currently 2+1 (upgraded in 2006): 29,000 vehicles per day
* Kampen-Zuid - Kampen-West: currently 1x2: 20,000 vehicles per day (upgrade to 2x2 likely)
* Kampen-West - Frieseweg: currently 1x2: 12,000 vehicles per day (upgrade not likely)
* Frieseweg - Ens: currently 1x2, but 2x2 under construction (to be opened in 2013)
* Ens - Interchange Emmeloord: currently 2x1, but serious plans for 2x2 (public hearings in 2011).

In fact, I passed through N50 today. Here's a picture of the Ramspol Bridge replacement construction:

Could the IJssel river crossing become 2x1 or would that need the bridge to be reconstructed too?

The situation now in Dishoek, in the direction towards Vlissingen.
The road is now only for bicycles and the path trow the 'dunes' is made better (less sand on it).
Here a picture of my from some weeks ago:
