A truck with pineapples overturned on A16 near Breda after he had to take evasive action because of a motorist. 2 NB lanes closed. Huge traffic jams in the surrounding areas.

Are there plans to widen the complete A4 from Amsterdam to Den Haag to 4x4 because it goes from 5x5 to 2x2 and then to 3x3. Traffic jams much.

There is currently a 2x2 bottleneck near Leiden. A 2x3 aqueduct is currently under construction and will be opened in 2012 (completion in 2014). This aqueduct has space for 2x5 lanes plus shoulders.

Apart from the old Ringvaart aqueduct, all structures along A4 will have space for 2x5 lanes.

From Schipol down the A4 I saw a long stretch of construction works going on. I can't remember how far was it from Schipol, it could be near Leiden, I also can't recall the highway profile. It was either 2x2 or 3x3. Is that the aqueduct reconstruction you're talking about or are any widening projects going on in that area?

A28 Zwolle - Meppel

The final works are done: the A28 Zwolle - Meppel widening to 2x3 lanes has been completed. It took almost a year with 6 days to spare. Here's a video of the last leg to be completed; the opening of the 3rd lane between Meppel and Zwolle (southbound direction).

That's the aquaduct near Leiden.

Awesome video! I particularly love the miniature blue sign graphic which you made pop up near each exit. Well done!

1. A2 near Vinkeveen. 5 lanes tempting you to push the pedal to the metal.

2. A view across 12 lanes.

3. The oversize median provides space for... what? 18 lanes? A 4-lane reversible? A light-rail? An oversized bicycle path?

4. Approaching interchange Holendrecht, the 6 lanes divide up to 4 lanes towards A2 and 2 lanes towards A9.

5. It is suggested to use a left shoulder if there are 4 or more lanes in one direction. Usually these eventually end up being an additional travel lane, but A2 has sufficient capacity for quite a while into the future.

6. Six-lane carriageways are extremely uncommon in Europe. The Netherlands has only a few. Another notable location is A12 just west of Utrecht.

7. Interchange Holendrecht, with the Amsterdam Amstel Business Park skyline in the distance. Road traffic is surprisingly quiet, because they applied the (expensive) dual-layer porous asphalt. This reduces more noise than any lowering of speed limit could ever achieve (up to 7 decibels).

8. A side view of this massive motorway. But motorways are not the only thing the Dutch seem to excel in in the recent years. Only a few kilometers away are a 4-track railway and the busiest inland shipping canal in the world.

Wow I can't believe how much this stretch has improved! I last was in Holland back in October 2000, and I remember back then the only road I recalled having more than 3 lanes at the time was the A4 near Schiphol.

The signage has also gotten a lot better too! I think the NL-standard for overhead signage should become the model for the rest of Europe!

Then the ending might not have been funny at all. Accidents are never funny.

Can you tell me about how large part of the Dutch motorway network has a speed limit of 100 (or even lower)? I do not need an exact value, a rough estimate would be OK for me.

Nearly the entire west (Randstad metropolitan area) and some patches here and there. Most notable outside Randstad is A16 between Dordrecht and Breda. The limit is also 100 around most major cities ('s-Hertogenbosch, Zwolle, Tilburg, Enschede, Arnhem, Groningen, Venlo).

I took this pic on the A2 Motorway on the way to Amsterdam during my last trip to Holland back in October 2000.

Quick question... what does the "7" on the Nieuwegein sign mean, and how come it is not there anymore on the newer signs?

It is a numbered detour route. Those can be permanent, but most are temporarily. Quick answer, well... ?
