N62 Sluiskil Tunnel

In the province of Zeeland, a new sign indicating the construction of the Sluiskil Tunnel has been unveiled. This tunnel will cross under the canal from Gent to Terneuzen, a busy inland shipping canal. The new tunnel will feature 2x2 lanes and is one of the larger construction projects in Zeeland in the coming years. This will smooth traffic from Middelburg/Vlissingen to Gent and Antwerpen. The tunnel will likely be completed in mid-2015. Of interest is that this tunnel will be constructed using a TBM (Tunnel Bore Machine) and not the usual immersed tube construction.

However the last A15-alternative west of Zevenaar could only be effective when the A12 between Westervoort and the new interchange would be widened to 2x4, and further on to Oud-Dijk interchange to at least 2x3, with space for a further widening to 2x4. Apart from that, I would like the Oud-Dijk interchange to be completed.

Translation:

Rijkswaterstaat are testing a new type of asphalt on the A58 near Vlissingen on a stretch of road some 300 meters long.

The asphalt in question contains finely grained steel wool fibers. When the road surface is damaged due to frost or wear and tear, an induction machine with a large steel shield will slowly driver over the damaged surface. This creates a magnetic field that heats the steel wool to its liquidizing point which will cause the cracks in the road to melt shut.

The goal is to minimize the number and duration of road works, as well as to increase the average quality of the road surface.

A12 Utrecht - Arnhem

The widening of A12 east of Utrecht is going full spead ahead. The first section until Driebergen will be widened to 8 lanes. Then 6 lanes / shoulder running east of that.

Some pictures by "boe!":

Nice, how far is the 2x3 w shoulder running going ? Imho they should just upgrade that whole motorway to at least 2x3 to the German border.

Nice . About bloody time. Such main roads should not be 2x2.

Aye, The A15 should be 2x3 along the length too, as should the A58 imho, and the A2 between Maasbracht and Geleen.

A10 Second Coen Tunnel, Amsterdam

Tomorrow the 4th and final segment of the Second Coen Tunnel will be submerged into position. So far the shipping and submerging of the 4 tunnel segments went pretty smooth. No unforeseen delays and the great weather also helps. The segments will be adjusted in the coming months, so that the tunnel will be completed by late 2011. Then all systems can be installed, and the tunnel will be opened to traffic in late 2012 or early 2013. Then the old Coen Tunnel will be renovated, after which the whole Coen Tunnel project + West Amsterdam Skyway will be open in full to handle the predicted 190 000 vehicles per day in 2020.

Nope. Not a single Dutch motorway is tolled. We pay tolls through our gas tax, motor vehicle tax and road tax.

There are two toll tunnels; Westerschelde Tunnel (N62) and Kil Tunnel (N217). Neither are motorways. There is also a tiny toll bridge in Nieuwerbrug but that one has no significance for other than local traffic.

Instead of tolls, they charge the highest gas taxes in continental Europe and hefty parking prices. Even small cities sometimes charge € 1.70/hour or more.

The tolled bridge in Nieuwerbrug. The last time I drove there it costed me € 0,50.

Extremely cool pics of the Westrand Skyway / 2nd Coen Tunnel in Amsterdam:

1. A10 motorway, with the second Coen Tunnel visible. View to the north. The A10 northbound lanes will be swapped to the east, to create working space for the A5 entrance which will be in the median of A10.

2. The A5 Westrandweg, or Skyway as I'd like to call it. This is the first significantly elevated motorway in the Netherlands. Little Bangkok.

Isn't there an elevated section on the A20 in Rotterdam?
