That section will very likely be widened if A15 gets constructed in that area (2015 - 2018)

Oh good, a 5-year plan, when by that time traffic may have doubled anyway. It always amazes me, there's me flying past Emmerich, crossing the border and straight into a traffic jam!

Massive accident on A2 near Weert, where a semi-truck collided with a army troop transport truck. 1 killed and 14 injured. The motorway has been closed since 10 am. Because of the heat, red cross will distribute water to motorists stuck in traffic.

Extreme traffic disruption in southern Netherlands this morning.

A bunch of criminals robbed an armored money transport truck in Amsterdam, with an extensive gunfight with the police. They fled south on A2, and after about 80 kilometers their car crashed and went up in flames. They then carjacked another vehicle, and continued to race south, after which another gunfight with the police around Eindhoven occurred. The police had to give up, the criminals likely fled to Belgium.

A2 was closed in both directions due to police investigations, which caused extreme traffic congestion on alternate routes, mainly A59/A27 with a 44 kilometer traffic jam there. Severe traffic congestion also occured on local alternate routes and on A50/A12 near Arnhem. With 130 000 vehicles per day, the A2 there is the busiest river crossing in this part of the Netherlands.

Wow! The most exiting thing that ever happened to me on the A2 is getting myself a vanilla Magnum ice-cream at the Total petrol station between Utrecht and Amsterdam...

Significant problems on the A10 beltway of Amsterdam. A piling driver at the 2nd Coen Tunnel roadworks is at risk of tipping over, and the left lanes have been closed in both directions. This mean there is only 1 lane available on a motorway where the regular 2 isn't enough in the first place. There will be severe traffic disruption through the Amsterdam metropolitan area.

Design of the new Badhoevedorp interchange (A4/A9) near Amsterdam.

It has a cross-section of 24 lanes maximum.

Will be completed by 2016.

Further congestion reduction

Congestion was down by 19% nationwide in the first half of 2011, compared to 2010. The main factors was the very dry weather and of course the completion of several key widening projects, especially in central and northern Netherlands. Congestion was down by 30% in the Amsterdam region and 15% in the Utrecht region. Congestion did not go down in the Rotterdam region as no widening projects were completed there in the past 6 months. Congestion increased along A4 near Leiden, due to the large roadworks for the new, wider aqueduct. The 19% reduction was the largest ever recorded in the Netherlands, which is now at the lowest point since 2005.

Technical question for you, Chris: what is the definion of "congestion", at least the one used in statistics?

A traffic jam (Dutch: file) is defined by Rijkswaterstaat as traffic going less than 50 km/h for at least 2 kilometers in a row. There are subvariants such as "slow" (<50 km but not stopped), "slow to stationary" (<50 km with stationary patches - stop and go) and "stationary" (stopped or mostly stopped traffic)

Traffic jam statistics are expressed as "congestion pressure", this is the number of kilometers of traffic jam multiplied by the number of minutes it existed. Hence, a 4 kilometer traffic jam that exists for 10 minutes results in 40 km-min. A 3 km traffic jam with a duration of 10 minutes that evolves into a 10 km traffic jam with a duration of 30 minutes results in (3*10 + 10*30) 330 km-min. The worst spots usually have over 100.000 km-min per year, and sometimes over 300.000 km-min per year (per direction).

Gridlock on the inner lane of A10 to Coen tunnel. Any idea why? The outer lane is clear, and we see clearly some drivers trying to get through the city via S116 expressway.

Source is http://routes.tomtom.com, and you can also see there substantial traffic jams on Polish miserable single carriegaways (like E40 east of Krakow, for instance). Show them your NIMBYs who think that motorways make traffic jams, and not lack thereof.

EDIT
Sorry for offtop, but 1000th post! Long live Coen tunnel! Long live 2x4 motorways!

What will happen to the old road? Demolished ? If they do that it's a massive waste of a fine motorway and money.

Of course it will be removed. The new alignment south of Badhoevedorp has been chosen to remove the old alignment going right through the middle of the village.

Nothing fine about it. Every morning rush-hour it's a bottleneck creating a lot of congestion.

Does anyone here know of former plans to link A261 in Tilburg (north end) to A58 and then Turnhout (Belgium)
