That's because the Netherlands is one of the densest populated countries in the world, besides city states.

Our population density is actually higher than metro Atlanta!

Today, i drove again to Zaandam (near Amsterdam). I drove over the A1 at 11.30 and 14.00 again, man that road is just nuts, 3 - 4 lanes per direction completely crowded with traffic! And we're not talking about rushhour times or something.

A research has been done by Maaike Snelders about the 'real' need for the Dutch highways. This were the results:

Left is the current situation (not really up-to-date) and to the right is the 'ideal' highway map...

A 2x4 lane motorway from Ommen to Coevorden? Come on, that right map makes no sense.

Our current motorway-network is quite alright, the problem is capacity. I think less than a 100 km of new motorways are actually necessary.

I think it is not al that weird, it's not like it's ever gonna happen. But you shouldn't think about the excisting motorways. And then yes their is traffic between Zwolle-Emmen/Hoogeveen/Groningen... It's just really different from what excist right now.

I'm guessing this is a canal bridge-- it's pretty massive looking, and I don't see a railroad on the map:

Pretty cool.
WoW, how interesting! And only if a tall ship was passing over the canal bridge, above fully packed motorway, the photograph would have been even better.

I studied this map somewhat better.

It just doesn't makes sense, some road have a capacity that will never be needed (2x5 lanes north of Almere?), others have huge bottleneck, like narrowing from 2x5 to 2x3 lanes.
It almost looks like this map was made with the total absence of other roads.

That is what i was trying to tell you, this is just a theoraticly (wrong word?) study based on maths. I can try to find more articles about it if you like?

I guess 2x5 lanes north of Almere make sense because the Afsluitdijk would not have a motorway on it, so yes, it was clearly made from scratch.

If these articles were in English, i would willingly read them too .

This picture looks like honeycomb .

I think widening roads will make more place for cars, but will it really change anything? Problem is (Chris said that) lack of local roads. Local traffic mixes together with long distance traffic. I think it is wrong. So instead of building motorways, maybe you should think of building new local roads for drivers, that use motorway not out of choice, but of necessity?

And did you consider anytime, if real problems are these (stupid in my opinion) totsos, slowing down and impeding the taffic? I wonder if straightening of main directins would improve situation...

EDIT: Eeee... does this map mean, that Afsluitdijk (ugh, another difficult word ) will be closed for traffic or pulled down ?

Not really, the Afsluitdijk have low traffic volumes. It barely has to be a motorway, considering the <20.000 AADT.

But look at all those motorways in the east and north, there is by far no potential to fill all those motorways with motorway-like traffic volumes.

Yes, it looks a bit too much. Probably this Maaike Snelders just likes motorways a lot, like we do!

P.S. By the way, Chriszwolle, that map you posted earlier with all the existing motorways in The Netherlands is great. Do you have one including the motorways u/c or planned?

Today I had my first day at the new office in Zwijndrecht, coming from Amsterdam and following the A4, A13, A20 and A16 it's about 99 kilometers.

The A4 is a pain in the ass. Big shame the work scheduled for the A4 between hoogmade and Zoeterwoude is postponed until further notice.

http://www.rijkswaterstaat.nl/projec..._hoogmade.aspx

Coming from Amsterdam the A4 goes from 2x5 (Schiphol) to 2x2 (North) to 2x3 (Middle) to 2x2 (South) to 2x3 (The Hague).

The middle section of 2x3 is upgrade together with the HSL high-speed railway from Antwerp to Schiphol. But the North 2x2 and South 2x2 sections are still waiting to be upgraded. The work on the North 2x2 between Burgerveen and the Ringvaartaquaduct started this summer and is due in 2010. The South 2x2 bit was supposed to be the same but for environmental reasons it's postponed until further notice.

From my experience the southern part of the old 2x2 A4 needs the upgrade most since it's running through a very dense area, for the same reason it's also hard to upgrade it to 2x3 and thus that particular 2x2 causes major traffic delays on a daily basis.

I made this overview of the busiest sections in 2006 with an AADT of over 100.000 on working days:

A total overview with the AADT of all motorways can be found here:
