First video of the new A74 in Venlo. I started filming at A73 north of Venlo and ended on A61 near Kaldenkirchen, covering the entire Venlo bypass. I also filmed northbound, this video will come later.

Just measured the newly opened A74, and I came with exactly one mile for the Northbound carriageway. For some reason you can't make a route through A74 in Google Maps yet .

A24 Blankenburg Tunnel, Rotterdam

A majority in the Dutch parliament approved the new Blankenburg Tunnel west of Rotterdam today. The Blankenburg Tunnel project will be altered; the tunnel will be longer, reducing the local impact even further, and according to some sources, the tunnel will be toll free for cars.

The new Blankenburg Tunnel will carry the A24 motorway which connects A15 and A20 west of Rotterdam. A portion of A20 will also be widened to 2x3 lanes. It will serve as an outlet of the Port of Rotterdam, and will also serve significant commuter traffic, specifically from the N57 and Spijkenisse.

A74 Venlo

Another video of the A74, this one is northbound from German A61, across A74 and A73 until the north side of Venlo.

Motorway interchange Gouwe

Motorway interchange Gouwe opened in the 1930's, even though A20 (then Rijksweg 3) was not a motorway at that time (widened 1962).

Here's a photo, exact date unknown, circa 1939.

The same interchange in 2011.

N305 Flevoland province widening

Somewhat out-of-the-blue news occurred last week in the Flevoland province, where the provincie and the Zeewolde municipality signed an agreement for widening the N305 provincial highway to 2x2 lanes. It was originally postponed due to budget cuts, but they managed to find € 20 million for the first phase, which consists of 12 kilometers of N305 to be widened to 4 lanes. The widening is mainly a traffic safety issue as traffic volumes are not very high. The construction works should be carried out in 2013-2014. A second phase includes the widening further west to A27.

With some more work they could have a full expressway alternative.

So what ? It's in the middle of a bloody polder, hardly like any people are bothered, since when has ''speeding'' been a good reason not to upgrade a road, that is just retarded...

It's already classed as an ''autoweg''. 100 km/h speed limit.

Because of Duurzaam Veilig I'm touchy with roads in general in Holland which are being ruined.

Also articles like this:
http://www.bndestem.nl/regio/roosend...p-de-schop.ece
Perfectly good roads downgraded for no good reason whatsoever.

ANY new road, any road widening, and any increase in mobility (so also speed limit) should be applauded. I don't understand how people accept worse and worse mobility and anti car measures year by year. You used to be able to drive faster ( especially around the randstad the speed limits are ludicrous) , don't have your car ruined by speedbumps, park up for free within 5 minutes walking of the city center. No stupid 30 and 60 zones, etc... I wish I was born 15 years earlier, so I had a car when driving was still all fun and wasn't frowned upon by so many. Good infra where you can get from A to B asap is the foundation for a healthy economy.

Not that I care! I hate this road if I have to use it, boring all the way so just speed up and get done with it. Just stating something that I see as having a high probability of occuring.

N201 Aquaduct Amstelhoek

A new aquaduct is under construction near the village of Amstelhoek, south of Amsterdam. Construction began about a year ago, the aquaduct will open in the second half of 2013. It's part of a major upgrade of the N201 provincial highway.

The plywood is a little odd but kudos on the upgrade.

Is there any particular reason why this thing is called an aquaduct whereas a similar construction in Zeeland on the A58 is called Vlaketunnel? Or are we just winging it?

The terminology is mixed up sometimes indeed. I think the main differences are length and construction. Most tunnels in the Netherlands are immersion tunnels, while aquaducts are usually constructed as open-pit sites. Tunnels are usually considered as being 250 meters or more in length. The Vlake Tunnel has a closed section of 327 meters, and could be considered a tunnel, but the Prinses Margriet Tunnel in Friesland has a closed section of 77 meters and is indeed more like an aquaduct than a tunnel, even though it was constructed as an immersed tunnel.

I think we should call them all tunnels, to be honest. Do we even have any real aqueducts in this country?
