A2 Diefdijk Coupure

This the A2 motorway near Culemborg. An interesting feat of engineering is here, the so-called "Diefdijk Coupure". It's a water barrier in case of flooding from the Waal River. This dike prevents flooding to reach further north. It's a movable barrier that will drop down on the motorway to stop floods.

A1 Muider Bridge

Some more history.

The first bridge across the Merwede Canal (current Amsterdam - Rhine Canal) was built in 1933 as a 2 or 3-lane bridge. It was replaced by the current bridge in 1970, which was built right next to it. The bridge had to be replaced for traffic from both road and water, because the canal was being widened at the time.

It was one of the longest bridges in the Netherlands at the time, probably only the Moerdijk Bridge was longer in the 1930s. Although the main span wasn't all that impressive, the total span was relatively long.

1933 Bridge:

1970 Bridge, reinforced with a cable-stayed design in 2010-2011. The original bridge was left (south) of this bridge.

Very slightly indeed. You can hardly tell the difference...

A13 Den Haag - Rotterdam

The A13 in the late 1950s. It was the first 2x3 motorway in the Netherlands. It was widened from 1x4 to 2x3 in 1955. I wonder how many other motorways there were in Europe with 2x3 lanes in 1955 or before. Probably not very much, for instance Italy and the United Kingdom did not have any 2x2 motorways at that time (both having their first 1958).

Obviously from a time when lane discipline was unheard of.

And unnecessary with only 3 cars on the road. Those were the days.

There are currently 180.000 vehicles per day on this stretch. It's not uncommon for A13 to be jammed for its entire length. Relief will come in 2015 when A4 Delft - Schiedam opens a couple of kilometers west.

State road 13 was a real killer road. Death toll was way too high for the non-devided 1x4 road. So the decision was made to rebuild it into a motorway - and do it right that time.

The so-called "tunnel traverse" was built in Rotterdam during the late 1930s and early 1940s. The Maas Tunnel opened to traffic in 1942, it was the first immersed tunnel in Europe. This tunnel on the photo crosses the "Maastunnelplein", just south of the Maas Tunnel.

N50 Ramspol Bridge

The new Ramspol Bridge in the N50 expressway north of Kampen is nearing completion. The lanes are now marked and the bridge will likely open to traffic in mid-November. The new bridge is much higher than the old one and also three times wider.

I visited the construction site today. Some photos:

I'm sure the Autolaghi system was not a 2x2 road (it was more like a common 2 lane national road, grade separated), but I'm not so sure about the Padova - Venezia Mestre motorway (which will later become part of the A4), opened in 1933.
Anyway, it was probably designed as the A8/A9. Since I live beside it, I'll go and check closely the width of the original overpasses (you can see the widenings in different times).

Do you have any historical source about that first handful of european motorways? I'd like to know more about that stretch but I can't find any clue...

Well, sir, there's nothing on earth like a genuine, bona fide, electrified, six-car monorail!

Marchionne means never having to say you're sorry.

Due to Photobucket f*cking up, most images won't be visibile in my old posts. If you need anything specific, please write me.

What's the point of that extra height of the N50 bridge if it can still open and close?
