It's quite clear that any savings on the A4 project will not go to municipal roads of Rotterdam.

Batadorp Motorway Interchange

The Batadorp Motorway Interchange is located northwest of Eindhoven. A2 and A58 intersect here. The interchange was entirely rebuilt from 2006 to 2010 as part of the Eindhoven bypass remodeling.

2006, a very tight loop for A2 through traffic.

2010, a half-stack interchange with grade-separated weaving.

A50 Eindhoven - Oss

The A50 Eindhoven - Oss opened in phases between 2003 and 2006. It was one of the largest new motorway projects after 2000. Interestingly the whole road was built with concrete, with only a layer of asphalt. Images of concrete pistes are not common in the Netherlands, as no concrete motorways remain.

A50 at Veghel in 2003.

A15 Spijkenisse

As industrial as it gets in the Netherlands. Spijkenisse exit along A15 in the Port of Rotterdam area.

Chris, I was just wondering: will this exit be altered due to the MaVa*-project?

It appears that the new government formation will come to a close soon. The center-right liberals and the center-left social democrats will form a two-party center government.

Sources indicate current minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen will retain her post at the Infrastructure & Environment ministry.

There are no details yet about the (road) finances of the next government. A multi-party agreement in the spring proposed a significant cutback on road spending, it's not known whether this will remain in order or if it is to be changed.

That would be extremely good news for the motorst, if Schultz stays!

The John F. Kennedylaan in Eindhoven is one of the few urban expressways in the Netherlands.

Note the houses on the left side are integrated with a sound barrier.

N7 Groningen

The N7 in Groningen. It will be widened in the coming years to 2x4 lanes, partially below ground with an elevated compact half-stack interchange with A28 at the Julianaplein interchange

A2 Maastricht

A new viaduct was driven into position today at the Kruisdonk Motorway Interchange (A2/A79) near Maastricht. This was only the second time this kind of job was performed in the Netherlands. All went smooth, the positioning was completed in 2.5 hours. The viaduct was built in the past year outside traffic, so disruptions were relatively minimal.

A50 Ewijk, Waal River Bridge

The construction of the Waal River Bridge at Ewijk (west of Nijmegen) is progressing about 5 meters per week.

Only a few years old, though already almost out of capacity. I predict daily traffic jams around Veghel within, say, 10 - 15 years there. The local roads around the exits (especially A50 x N279) also can't handle the traffic already anymore, causing jams on the merging lanes/hard shoulders.

Yep, the highest volume on that stretch is already 69.000 vehicles per day just east of Veghel.

The new government will not pursue plans to implement a kilometer charge, Dutch media reports. Investment in road capacity and low economic growth are sufficient not to require a system where people are priced off the road to reduce traffic congestion.

Main points from the new government agreement;

* execution of road projects with a high cost-benefit ratio (A24 Blankenburg Tunnel + A27 Ring Utrecht 2x7)
* no kilometer charge
* cancel exemption of road tax for oldtimer vehicles.
* diesel excise raise by 3 cents
* LPG excise raise by 7 cents
* no petrol / gasoline excise raise

It's a rough agreement, but I think it's a good one. No doubt the large reduction of traffic congestion due to road capacity expansion has led PvdA (Labor party) to reconsider their kilometer charge proposal.

What is, or was, the kilometer charge? You would have had to report your odometer reading to the government every year and pay for what you'd driven since the previous year, or...?
