We need to sue Belgium if bumps are the problem!

That's because it is the noise barrier.

A5, Amsterdam

The first phase of the extended A5 motorway in Amsterdam will open December 14 at 5 a.m. It's a 7 kilometer extension from the Raasdorp Interchange (A9) into the Port of Amsterdam area (S102).

The second phase, including the 3.3 kilometer Basisweg Viaduct and the Second Coen Tunnel, will open in early 2013. A8 will also be widened to 2x4 lanes for this purpose.

I suppose the A200 from Haarlem could be extended an extra half a km.

N50 Ramspol Bridge

The new Ramspol Bridge north of Kampen opened to traffic November 18th, but the official inauguration by minister Schultz is tomorrow. I took some photos around noon today.

N331 Vollenhove

New bridge in Vollenhove, a town at the border of Overijssel and Flevoland. This was a seaport before the 1940s, now it's 80 kilometers from the sea.

Northwest of Amsterdam of course. It is considered the most important missing link in the Amsterdam metropolitan area. The right-of-way is already acquired since the 1960s, but it is likely that the Noord-Holland province will execute most of the project.

If they did link it, it would mean digging another tunnel, right?

The design of the new route is not advanced. However, only a few buildings need to be removed. A tunnel would be a waste of money. The annual operational costs of the Noord-Holland provincial road network almost doubled after they opened the new N201 Waterwolf Tunnel, so I doubt if they are eager to construct more tunnels.

The golf course is already property of Rijkswaterstaat, they lease it to the golf club.

Obstacles for an extended A8 are chiefly connected with higher traffic volumes. A8 is not the best motorway in the Netherlands. It runs through the city of Zaandam on a narrow right of way, shoulders are frequently substandard.

1. Zaandam interchange. It's adequate for the heavy A7-A8 traffic, but is a very simple cloverleaf for other traffic, especially the lack of collector lanes.

2. The drawbridge across the Zaan River. There are already some 67,000 vehicles per day here.

N50 Ramspol Bridge

Minister Schultz of Transportation officially inaugurated the new N50 Ramspol Bridge today, by sounding a fog horn. The new bridge has 13 meters clearance for shipping and will open "only" 1800 times per year, instead of the 8000 times with the old bridge.

The new bridge is the first known drawbridge in the world that is entirely energy-neutral. Energy is generated when the drawbridge lowers and 320 solar panels generate enough electricity to even supply the grid.

Sorry for the off topic, but is there a map that show the amount of lands reclaimed from the sea in NL? How many sq kms? Are further polders planned?

All reclaimed land:
sadly, I do not know what the colors mean. They're not based on the order of reclamation.

Here with a legenda

This area would have a flooding risk without dikes and dunes.

AFAIK there are no future plans. The only recent one was the Maasvlakte II

The word 'reclaimed land' is somewhat misleading, but it is often used for lands that used to be water.

The first (largest) image above (from Keokikracer) howevers show 'polders', which is not the same. A Polder is an area without natural water runoff. This means that rainwater has to be pumped out actively to keep it from flooding.

In the white areas on that same map there are rivers and creeks where water runs from high to low. In the colored areas the water has to be moved 'up' in order to reach the rivers and the sea.

Here's a diagram that sort of shows that:

This map shows the major reclaimed land projects (drained lakes and sea). Only the reclaimed lands of Zeeland are not on here:

A2 speed limit raised to 130, but at night only

Starting this night, the speed limit on A2 will be raised to 130 km/h in both directions between 19:00 and 06:00 hours over a 12.8 kilometer section between the Vinkeveen and Maarssen exits.

This is the section concerned:

Not many trucks here. Must be weekend?

Is it one of this section where they close left lane to the traffic out of peak hours. I remember on near Utrecht, however it had narrower and kind of bumpier left lane.

Nope, 5 lanes all day long.

Do you mean the plus lane near Houten?

That is A4 Burgerveen - De Hoek, southwest of Amsterdam.
