Nearly 15.000 trucks daily. That's a line of 240km.

A2, Holendrecht-Abcoude:

Exit Abcoude:

Exit Vinkeveen:

Exit Breukelen:

Rest area Haarrijn:

A2 Maarssen, the parallel roads merge here with the main road:

MMA: Meest Milieuvriendelijk Alternatief (Most environmental alternative)
Wisselbaan: bi-directional lane

6 lanes projected in the Netherlands, i just cannot believe it

Well, we'll see. 5 lanes might be enough for the near future, but they are building a new neighborhood near Utrecht of the size of a small city, and a lot of people might work in Amsterdam, so it can creates quite a large traffic flow there.

Yes, I know a lot about those plans of the rebuilding of the A2, because I live in Abcoude, a small town which you can see a few posts above. A few months ago there was a presentation by someone from the government who explained what was going to happen. It is necessary though, because the highway is a total mess right now (I hope to make some pics soon). Today, when I came back from school, I saw huge traffic jams between Vinkeveen and Breukelen (at 2 pm!).
During that presentation there was a lot of protest from people living close to the A2, because there are lots of problems with the noise. Some of them even went to the judge, but it didn't help. Personally I don't mind it, however I think that in a few years the highway capacity will be too small again.....

New road opening

The last segment of the A73 Venlo - Echt has been opened today. It consist of a 2,4 km land tunnel, the longest in the Netherlands, and a partial interchange with the A2 motorway. The tunnel is partially opened; one lane each direction, because of safety issues that haven't been completed yet.

This new road allows drivers to avoid Eindhoven, by taking the A73 to the south. It was one of the last missing links in Limburg province. It also relieves the N271 and N273 provincial roads, which go through towns and cities.

The other missing link in the area is the ultra-short A74 south of Venlo, allowing drivers to easily travel to the German A61 towards Mönchengladbach. This section is less than 2 km long, yet relieves the city of Venlo of through traffic through the city limits.

And this is the A73 at the day of opening. Problems at the tunnels, so they are closed. Not quite a good start, because the delays were several hours.

Friday is always a pain in the ass, concerning traffic jams, because the morning rushhour is usually not very busy, the evening rushhour starts early. This is 2pm:

Driving in the Netherlands really seems to be a pain in the ass ..

OT: I just got to know that "map" in Dutch is "kaart". It's exactly the same in Estonian as well.
