The inner 2x2 lanes are for through traffic bypassing the city. The outer 2x2 lanes are for local traffic and give access to a few exits plus two motorway interchanges with A59 (which are close to eachother).

The idea is good, but the design has been critized for the lack of capacity on the local lanes. It should have had 3+2+2+3 lanes.

Many aerial photos of Rijkswaterstaat are taken during the summer, often on Saturdays or Sundays. This particular stretch carries 140.000 - 160.000 vehicles per day.

A overview of the A2 at Den Bosch can you see at Bing maps, http://binged.it/U6itbE

Chris is right, the local lanes have to small capacity. Every day in the rush hours there is a traffic jam between the two part off to A59.

What exactly is being done at the noise barrier in Zeist? To me it looks as if they are only adding some sort of strip of the edge of the barrier's roof to make the barrier look nicer.

This is one of the few instances where you have a highway that is depressed in relate to its surrounding terrain while not being below sea level :p

The barrier is being made 2 meters higher. I assume it has something to do with the ammount of extra noise after the widening. (There are high appartmentbuildings behind de Luiffel van Zeist).

They should have made it a covered tunnel altogether, like in Utrecht.

And add € 20 million in annual cost? No thank you

The city of Zeist made the poor decision to build large apartment buildings next to an already decided motorway alignment in the late 1960s.

1,8 million per month to operate a tunnel that has emergency exists on its side and no risk of flooding and easy exhaustion?

Even a minor tunnel like the new N201 Waterwolf Tunnel adds € 3.5 million in annual operational costs. Not to mention a larger tunnel like a six-lane motorway.

Bad news for drivers on A2 this morning. 5 out of 6 lanes were closed due to an accident.

A 7th lane is absolutely necessary

A question about the sign: the white "70" with yellow blinking lights is a mandatory limit or just the suggested speed?

While driving in NL I considered it the legal limit, but in fact those signs showed up only when the traffic was already so congested that even reduced speeds (50) where impossible to keep.

They were intended as suggested limits, because the process is entirely automatic. The system was designed that the shown speeds only go up if traffic speeds go up.

However some legal idiots decided that it should be a mandatory limit. So you have to break the speed limit to solve the congestion, if people were to keep 50 km/h all the time they will never show a higher limit....

Yeah, I had several discussion about those blinking "speed limits" on Dutch motorways. According universal approach - only this example is a speed limit: 80 km/h and those: adv. 70 km/h are only advisable... But not for Dutch legislation...

So I was driving as standard approach for ages in the NL, until someone show me my mistake in the written Dutch Road Rules.
That's why foreigner drivers drive much faster until they see normal speed limit sign with number with red circle around.

N62 widening 2x2

The Council of State has rejected all appeals against the plan to widen the N62 between A58 and the Westerschelde Tunnel to a 2x2 expressway. One of the appealers said the noise would increase unbearably. The study has shown noise increases by only 0.3 dB, and the Council of State confirmed that.

A50 / A73 Ewijk Motorway Interchange

Major works at the Ewijk Motorway Interchange have now been completed, with the completion of a 2-lane semi-direct connector for traffic from the north (Apeldoorn) to the east (Nijmegen). This finishes the new interchange as part of the A50 Ewijk - Valburg widening to 2x4 lanes. The last remaining work is outside traffic, namely the reinstating of the Nijmegen > Eindhoven loop that has been out of traffic since 1997.

north is up

Yep, several ones have been changed to a different layout or will be changed;

* Badhoevedorp (A4/A9)
* Beekbergen (A1/A50)
* Deil (A2/A15)
* Ewijk (A50/A73)
* Hoevelaken (A1/A28)
* Kerensheide (A2/A76)
* Kethelplein (A4/A20)
* Kunderberg (A76/A79)
* Valburg (A15/A50)

It's still a bit mind-boggling that some of the heaviest trafficked interchanges are still cloverleaf-forms like Rijnsweerd and Lunetten near Utrecht.

Rijnsweerd interchange (A27/A28) carries about 240 000 vehicles per day and Lunetten interchange (A12/A27) carries 335 000 vehicles per day.

Interchange Oudenrijn also has 2 cloverleaf connectors. If I'm not mistaken that's the busiest interchange in the country.
