There is a short 30 limit commencing after the Bompjes/Vasteland intersection because of the construction of the Inntel Hotel (former IMAX-theatre).

A20, Gouda

Here's a nice aerial photo of the A20 motorway west of Gouda.

The arch bridge across the railway tracks was built in the 1930s. It originally carried traffic in both directions. A second span was added in 1981 when the A12 was realigned and the Gouwe Motorway Interchange was shifted a bit west.

A20 Moordrecht Exit

This is the Moordrecht Exit along A20, between Gouda and Rotterdam. This interchange has a major issue, it's located next to a busy railway, with a level crossing. A new interchange will be constructed slightly to the northeast and includes a viaduct across the railway to ease queuing traffic at the level crossing and prevent waiting lines on the motorway.

The motorway is also overdue for a widening to 2x3 lanes, but that's not planned at this time.

Typical spot where the motorway should have been built at the same level as the railway, with all connecting roads one level up.

Different years, different design... there was probably lot less traffic both on road and rail.

If there will be new viaducts (certainly looks like there will be), will they be prepared for 2x3 lanes?

There will be a new overpass over the A20 motorway. It looks like it will have sufficient space for 2x3 lanes.

This is a very slow project (construction time is 5 full years) due to the incredibly poor soils in this area. This is the lowest part of the Netherlands, as much as 5 - 6 meters below sea level. The embankments need a lot of time to consolidate.

Imo fixing the N219 to 2x2 lanes is better than the A20 to 2x3, I think 2x3 will cause problems on the A12 near knp. Gouwe when merging with the A20...

The N219 is a perfect alternative to get to Rotterdam and join the A20 just when it's 2x3 again at Nieuwerkerk, only, the N219 is already congested as it is .

I fear that adding ''plus lanes'' or any work on the A20 (bar the expension of the exit near Moordrecht) will result in 120km/h going to 100 km/h .

Personally I take this route when both the A20 and the N219 are congested:

Yes it takes 15-20 minutes to drive that part, but at least it's ALWAYS 15-20 minutes, while the A20 can sometimes mean a 25-30 minute drive on bad days!

The N219 is not that old in the current situation, the queues that happen there are FAR worse than what happens near Moordrecht though on the A20...
Exit nieuwerkerk is always congested between 4.30pm and 7pm though since Nesselande was built and sometimes the Whole N219 between the A20 and A12 too...

In this video:
http://youtu.be/IHmbG0vWiIg?t=6m35s

you can nicely see the effect of queues backing up on A6 near Knoopunkt Muiderberg.

EDIT: different topic, I'm following that train

Is this overpass (over road and rail) reserved for some kind of travel infrastructure, or something like a "nature-duct"?

Its an ecoduct indeed. I doubt the effectiveness of it though (research has shown that in general ecoducts aren't really all that great in enlarging habitats of wild animals in the Netherlands). On one side of the ecoduct, Hilversum begins, on the other side there is a sport complex and a golf course.

There really should be no such thing as a "busy level railroad crossing" both for traffic flow and safety reasons.

It seems to me that Netherlands is now too urbanized for serious wildlife (except birds), but maybe I just haven't been in the right places...

Go to the Veluwe Or the north of The Netherlands (though that's mostly lakes birds benefit from)

Traffic chaos now btw. Snow. Already 500+ km of traffic jams.

The Gouwe-Aquaduct has space for 2x5 lanes with shoulders. Add the current plans for the local roads around the interchange to it, and I think two motorways with 2x3 lanes merging into 2x5 lanes is doable.
