Part of the project "A15 Expansion from the Rotterdam-Maasvlakte to Rotterdam-Vaanplein" is builiding a new, taller and wider bridge over the river Oude Maas. Along with the new bridge in the A50 and the new City Bridge in Nijmegen this is one of the largest ongoing projects on bridge construction in The Netherlands.

Forum member Jelco has made some very nice pictures just recently:

Germans are good like that. A few years ago, a German trucker crashed straight into a motorway bridge pillar on the M25 around London , also dying instantly. A second trucker subsequently ploughed onto the back of the first one. The first truck remained at the scene for days, due to the risk of the bridge collapsing.

A2 / A12 Oudenrijn Interchange

The "knooppunt Oudenrijn" in the mid-1950s. It is currently the busiest interchange in the Netherlands with over 360 000 vehicles per day.

That is an army base. It's at 't Harde army depot. They lift tanks on trains and stuff. I also think it's just a civilian crane depot. And they mount a christmas tree on top of those cranes in December.

A new flyover opened in the city of Utrecht today. Urban grade-separated infrastructure is rather uncommon in Dutch cities.

Excellent! That intersection has been such a bottle neck, especially on busy days at the Jaarbeurs with local commuters and out of town visitors coming off the A2 heading into town. I'm interested to see the difference next time I have to work out that way.

Amsterdam changes its paid parking structure as of 1 April 2013. The parking fees are now calculated per 7 minutes instead of per hour.

The rate is € 0.50 per 7 minutes.

Semi-related news: the Chipknip system, an electronic purse-card that is widely used to pay for parking meters (among other uses like vending machines) will be phased out in 18 months. Parking meters are likely to be then operated with debit/bank cards.

Good. I hate chip-or-cash machines, I never have either.

Yeah me too. A lot of street side parking have no cash but only "chipknip" options, which means tourists or people with a low balance can only park in garages, but parking garages are not readily available in many areas.

The chipknip is a chip on Dutch bank cards where people can charge a prepaid amount on. Most supermarkets are phasing it out due to V-pay, and it was mostly popular at vending machines and parking meters. Most people only had small amounts of money charged to the chipknip because it was non-refundable in case of a stolen, lost or broken bank card.

Don't tourists tend to face similar problems with the non-acceptance of foreign bank-issued debit cards though? Maestro seems to be about the only international card accepted, and that's if you're lucky!

The unusual long winter not only results in the average March temperature to be lower than the regular winter months, but also in the delay of road works. Many weekend closures were cancelled this month. Especially the N33 widening has been hit, they had to postpone weekend closures no less than 3 weekends in a row. This project is already on a tight schedule.

A new independent review of the A27 widening project at Utrecht was released yesterday, which confirmed the steps the minister of transportation has taken were correct and the widening is not possible without widening the concrete cut at the Amelisweerd reserve. The concrete cut will be widened by 15 meters on either side in current plans, and a cover will be constructed across the widened 14-lane motorway. These plans can now proceed as planned.

Happened to me in Innsbruck... I stopped there for one hour, to have a quick lunch in the city. The parking system used a credit chip with a minimum of € 20 or so.

They told me "Go to a garage". Yep, they'll build them oversized just to accomodate my RV...

So I was fined. Never paid and never heard anything about that

About New vs Old Asphalt on A18 , wouldn't be better to pave the left shoulder, too? Not with quality asphalt, of course, but at least a minimum of concrete to provide an acceptable surface in case you have to emergency brake while on the shoulder.

Well, sir, there's nothing on earth like a genuine, bona fide, electrified, six-car monorail!

Due to Photobucket f*cking up, most images won't be visibile in my old posts. If you need anything specific, please write me.
