A50 Ewijk Waal River Bridge

The second Waal River Bridge will open to traffic on May 21. It will feature 2x3 lanes while the old bridge is being renovated. This will substantially reduce southbound traffic congestion, which is currently the worst spot in the country.

When the old bridge is renovated in 2014, traffic will flow on 8 lanes.

Hey that pic is indeed from the RWS building, my workspot. Funny to see. I always love the view. You can see VCMN (the traffic control center) in the monitor shaped building, where I used to work as traffic controller. The control room in that building is full of screens and systems (Cameramonitoring, MTM, CDMS, boss-online, tunnelcontrol, etc) to control the many DVM systems.

Good to see.

A10 Amsterdam

These photos were taken on the first stretch of A10 (Amsterdam Ring Road) that opened in 1966.

Yes, the ANWB had a monopoly on signage until a while ago.

ANWB is the Dutch motorist- and tourist association. The letters originally meant Algemene Nederlandse WielrijdersBond. It was founded in 1885 as a cylist association.

Even earlier signs had an ANWB decal on them:

This looks rather dangerous.

The photo was taken at the former national road at Eursinge, which is currently the A28 motorway at the Pesse exit.

Outstanding. I love the guy in the middle who's about to join a 70km/h road from standstill as well.

Maasvlakte 2 road infrastructure

This April 2013 satellite photo shows the advancement of the Maasvlakte 2 / Port of Rotterdam expansion.

A new road was opened last year across the sea wall. The photo stretches 6 kilometers from left to right. You can also see the new coal-fired power plant in the center.

A new coal-fired power plant..that's interesting. I thought the strict environmental regulations in the EU would make natural gas a preferred choice.

There are several new coal powerplants being built in the Netherlands, like the RWE plant in the Eemshaven. The anti-nuclear power policy in Germany has something to do with it. These new coal powerplants are far more efficient and polute less than regular coal powerplants.

No, this is a "Let's see if you can make it" intersection.

That beach near Maasvlakte 2 is incredibly clean and neat. I don't remember ever seeing another beach opened for leisure (swimming, sunbathing, water sports) while tucked so close to a major sea port.

According to wikipedia it isn't a nudist beach but a 'normal' beach.

They have 10 sectors, jsut one is clothes-optional. One is a "kid and family beach", 4 are normal beaches and the other 4 are for water sports.

Nudist beach can be a normal beach as well, apart from the one at Zandvoort, which apparently is a meat market.

Traditionally the Maasvlakte has always been clothes optional. I used to love going to the old beach out there. I'm curious to check out the new beaches.

Europe became the dumping ground of cheap coal because of the shale gas revolution in the United States in the last few years. Last year coal-generated electricity increased by 16% while natural gas electricity decreased by 16%. Several gas-fired power stations are currently offline. There are 8 coal-fired power plants in the Netherlands. Most of those have high efficiency rates though.
