level crossings

Secretary of transportation Mansveld has approved a package to fund improvements at level crossings. It is a follow-up package to a recently completed package to improve level crossings.

Many improvements are reduction of waiting times at level crossings as well as infrastructural improvements, such as overpasses and tunnels. Many tunnels have been constructed in urban and rural roads, which have significantly reduced accidents at level crossings, the amount of incidents was reduced by 50% between 2000 and 2012, from 90 to 45 annual incidents involving a train and vehicle, cyclist or pedestrian.

These improvements are cost-effective (generally less than € 40 million per year) and are a win-win situation for every user. Fewer incidents mean fewer delays while tunnels and bridges across railways mean improved traffic flows.

The new package for 2014-2028 has a funding of € 320 million and will further tackle problems at level crossings. Tunnels and bridges are not always possible, because most railways run straight through towns. But especially in post-war environments tunnels are often a feasible solution.

7 railways converge at Zwolle, while there are only 5 level crossings in the entire city. The rest is grade-separated. I remember when I went to high school in the late 1990s I had to cross a railway where they were often shunting. Which means cyclists had delays of up to 20 minutes because the level crossing was closed the entire time. It was later replaced by a bicycle tunnel.

N340 Zwolle - Ommen

The Council of State has rejected all appeals against the reconstruction of the N340 provincial road between Zwolle and Ommen. Construction can now proceed.

The reconstruction of the N340 is the largest provincial road project in the Overijssel province. The current N340 is a two-lane road with a level crossing and traffic lights. The new N340 will feature grade-separation along the entire route. The segment between A28 and Dalfsen will be widened to 2x2 lanes, the rest to Ommen will feature 2x1 lanes. In addition, N48 will be widened to 2x2 lanes as well. There will be a full interchange with the A28 motorway, as well with the N48/N348 near Ommen.

The old bridge was in bad condition and had to open for ships too much. The new bridge is a couple of meters higher and of course in good condition

Pic from February made by Chris: you can see the bad state of the bridge here:

speed limit

Some speed limits are raised tomorrow;

* A4: Zoeterwoude-Dorp - Leidschendam from 100 to 130 (19-6 h)
* A4: De Hoek interchange (A5) - Burgerveen interchange (A44) from 120 to 130
* A5: De Hoek interchange (A4) - Raasdorp interchange (A9) from 120 to 130
* A32: Meppel - Leeuwarden uniformized; 130 all the way except for a 06:00 - 19:00 limit of 100 km/h at the Heerenveen interchange (A7) due to absence of C/D lanes.

Additionally, the speed limit on A5 (Raasdorp interchange - Coen Tunnel) will be raised from 80 to 100 km/h next month.

A24 Blankenburg Tunnel, Rotterdam

2,401 comments were made during the public hearing period for the decision to construct the new A24 west of Rotterdam. 2,335 of them came via Natuurmonumenten, a nature preservation organization. 66 inputs were made by other individuals or groups.

The next phase is the actual design phase. The next step is to publish the design-EIS, where people can comment on, and then the final EIS, where people can go to court to object to. The final EIS is planned for 2015 and construction for 2017-2021.

That A4 stretch is really nice, it's really weird to drive there at 100 while there is no car around you and the road is wide..

You mean the stretch The Hague - Leiden? Yeah, and you can't exceed the speed limit there because of the section control...

http://www.vananaarbeter.nl/

This site contains all road works but the idiots dropped the construction map.

Note that the Netherlands generally does not have as many long-term road works as in Germany or Belgium. Most roadworks are done in short periods, such as weekend and night closures. Other widenings are often outside traffic with little or no impact. For example the widening of A10 in Amsterdam to 2x4 lanes had no additional impact on traffic at all. The speed limit was lowered from 100 to 90, but lanes are fairly wide and there are no lane closures during workdays.

A348 Ellecom

Some photos of the A348 provincial motorway in Gelderland, near the northern terminus at Ellecom.

A348 was originally numbered A48 and was planned to run all the way from Arnhem to Hoogeveen. Only the first 10 kilometers from Arnhem were eventually built, although there is another segment of N348 near Brummen with a motorway cross-section.

N348 Brummen

The N348 has a short segment near Brummen that has a motorway cross-section, with 2x2 lanes and shoulders.

This segment opened in 1976, at the same time the Cortenoever Bridge across the IJssel River was completed. The bridge has only two lanes, but it was built with an expansion to 2x2 lanes in mind, space was preserved to build a second bridge south of it and construct a trumpet interchange between RW47 and RW48. The motorway segment was part of RW48 (A48) that was suppose to run from Arnhem to Hoogeveen. It is unclear whether this has ever been signed as a motorway. The 2x2 segment is only 4 kilometers long and the single planned interchange was not constructed (it's a roundabout nowadays).

A2 Utrecht - Amsterdam

The average speed check on A2 will come into effect starting July 15 from Maarssen to the Holendrecht interchange. This motorway segment has 5 northbound lanes and a speed limit of 100 km/h (a subsegment has a 130 limit at night).

A28 Utrecht - Amersfoort

The Council of State has dismissed all appeals against the widening of the A28 motorway between Utrecht and Amersfoort.

The widening works are nearing completion, and a large segment of A28 is already open with 2x3 lanes. Roadworks are now focussing on the bypass of Amersfoort, where temporary left shoulder running and additional auxiliary lanes are under construction. These works should be completed by December 2013.

The bypass of Amersfoort will be widened to a definitive 2x4 or 4x2 layout around 2018-2021, together with the reconstruction of the Hoevelaken motorway interchange, which includes the widening of 30 kilometers of A1 and A28.
