Let me get this straight: there were still appeals pending while works are almost complete? Had the appeals won, the road would be narrowed down back to its original width?

No, the highway is now being widened with plus lanes in both direction and auxiliary lanes. For the long run this wont be enough, that's why the future plans hold a widening to 2x4/4x2 passing Amersfoort. The dismissed appeals and the approval are for the long-run-project

That is incorrect, keokiracer. g.spinoza has got it right, the appeals dismissed are for the current project that is nearing completion.

The long-term project hasn't started procedures yet.

Right now there is a legal setup that allows an EIS to be repaired if they find that appeals have legal ground. That means they don't have to start over with it. It's technically legal to start a project as soon as the EIS/record of decision is published, they do not necessarily have to wait until all cases are through court, although they usually do.

There have been over 25 records of decisions in the past 6-7 years, none of them were rejected in court. Rijkswaterstaat is quite confident that their EIS/record of decisions have no holes in them.

That is completely retarded though. Just start building and we'll see if we get approval

[EDIT] When are they planning on starting procedures on the 2x4/4x2 widening? You said the works are suposed to start in 2018. Shouldn't they be starting the procedures yet?

They are following a new and unique process. The government sets a framework of requirements and wishes for the project (including things as landscaping, bridge design, unnecessary noise abatement, etc.) and the contractor that offers the most features within the available budget gets the job, and the EIS is designed based on that.

Lane count and interchange configuration is a non-negotiable demand, but the secondary design features are up for grabs. The budget is € 689 million from the national government and € 45 million from local governments to realize unnecessary (from a legal point of view) wishes.

This is the basic plan:

A7 Afsluitdijk

There are some problems on the Afsluitdijk, the 30 kilometer dam that connects North Holland with Friesland. The A7 motorway runs across it. There are sluices at either side, with a bascule bridge. It's 25 °C today, which means the bridges expanded and won't close properly. The fire department is hosing down the bridge to cool it off.

It's a weird phenomenon that happened one or two times before this year. I can't remember it happened in the last couple of years, while 25 °C is nothing exceptional in the Netherlands in the summer.

A28 Amersfoort

The reconstruction of the A28 motorway around Amersfoort was discussed yesterday. I took a small trip to view the roadworks.

The roadworks are almost finished, except for a stretch between Leusden and Leusden-Zuid exits. They widened some bridges, but not all.

1. The Leusden interchange was constructed in 1990 and was built with 2x4 lanes in mind. Right now it will feature a temporary 2x3 setup with left shoulder running.

2. This is the last segment that needs widening.

3. The widening is basically finished northbound.

4. The noise screens have a tree theme.

5. The Leusden-Zuid exit.

6. The widening south of Leusden-Zuid is finished. Although signed as a regular exit, is actually a motorway interchange. N221 is the former A28 stub when A28 wasn't completed further to Utrecht.

N201 Aalsmeer

These traffic lights are mounted on a breakaway gantry. These are installed directly in the path of a runway of Schiphol Airport.

Is this some kind of form of art, or is it temporary?

I took the photos yesterday (Saturday). The traffic volume is around 80.000 vehicles per day.

This segment is adopted in the masterplan (SVIR) to be widened to 2x3 lanes by 2040. No funding will likely be found before 2025.

The SVIR horizon planning (2040).

Yellow = at least 2x4
Blue = at least 2x3
Gray = no change

Do you also have a map showing only new motorways w/o widening sections?

There aren't many new motorways planned. A few missing links will be constructed, but the main objective is to widen the existing network.

Some other routes will / may be developed as 2x2 100 km/h N-roads though (such as N8, N18, N23, N31, N35)

The lack of some A65 between Tilburg and Vught is the major gap.

You can add N65 to this list

I just noticed the weird squiggly line on the southern part of the new A4 around Steenbergen
(red line in bottom left corner)
