Knooppunt Vaanplein used to be a windmill rather than a turbine.

That's interesting. I always considered Vaanplein to be a turbine. My bad.

Full turbine interchanges have never been built in the Netherlands. The closest example is the Zwijnaarde interchange in Belgium: http://goo.gl/maps/U7p2K

Interchanges like knooppunt Almere can be considered half turbines, although they are not quite the same in layout.

Actually, they are currently demolishing the last one of them.

Speed limits in highways around Rotterdam and Amsterdam to be lowered

Quote:
The maximum speed limit on parts of the Amsterdam and Rotterdam ring roads is to be reduced again because of pollution risks, the AD reports on Tuesday.

In January a court in Amsterdam tore up the transport minister’s decision to increase the speed limit on Amsterdam’s ring road from 80 kph to 100 kph during the day.

The court ruled Melanie Shultz had not taken sufficient account of the health risks associated with faster traffic and should look at her decision again.

The minister has now agreed to reduce the speed limit on the western part of the A10 and on the A13 at Rotterdam-Overschie from 100 kph back to 80 kph.

Although air pollution at the higher speed has remained within the legal limit, the minister is taking 'precautions', the AD says.

New tests carried out for the government show that although 100 kph on the A13 at Overschie does not yet break the pollution limit, air quality on this section will have reached its limit by January 1 2015.

N36 Almelo - Ommen

I recorded this video this morning of the N36, a 100 km/h super two in eastern Overijssel province. It's known as a "death road" due to the many fatal accidents. The traffic volumes on the first (southern) part are up to 25,000 vehicles per day, but the national government has little interest to upgrade it.

This was recorded on a Sunday morning, so no trucks and lane hoggers

A new design that is gaining ground in the Netherlands are priority roundabouts, which are not really roundabouts, but two unsignalized left turns. This avoids both the stop-and-go of traffic signals and the slowdowns of roundabouts. It works well when cross traffic is relatively low and through traffic is dominant.

I understand that safety is an issue, but I noticed some very long straight stretches of road where overtaking is not allowed. I guess you know that some of the accidents happen because people get nervous waiting behind some slow vehicle...

It combines the area consumption of roundabouts with the high number of conflict points of regular intersections. Way to go.

And when the left turns are less prevalent than the right turns.

It's still better than a regular cross intersection. If you are comming from the secondary road and want to go straight ahead (or turn left), in a classic intersection you can cross when there isn't traffic from any direction, but with this type of priority-roundabout you can advance after traffic is clear from your left, and then wait for traffic to be clear from the right. You cross it faster this way.
