N398, Friesland

The N398 is a new provincial road that acts as an outer bypass of Leeuwarden. It opened last year.

speed limits

The speed limits in the Netherlands were increased to 130 km/h in 2012. However, there are many stretches still limited at 100 or 120 km/h, some dynamically (100 during the day and 130 at night). Apparently these speed limits are hard to follow for motorists, so they're going to install small speed limit signs on every 1 km hectometer pole, if the speed limit is fixed during the entire day. This should increase awareness of where 120 or 130 is the limit. Most 100 km/h stretches already feature such speed limit signs, as do many provincial roads.

I agree. Now they're just making a complicated situation even more complicated. Where's the sense in that?

Thank the CDA for that. They didn't want to spend a few millions on harmonizing speed limits back in 2012.

It would've been much simpler if there was a 100 km/h urban speed limit and 130 km/h rural speed limit. No nonsense of going back from 130 to 120 because it makes a slight difference on paper.

There isn't any political party that is really beneficial for the motorist though .
Yeah PVV, but the leader is an idiot overall (imho).

The rest have all done one thing or the other to make driving more expensive, less enjoyable, or discourage it.

I'm all for 100 or 130 everywhere. Will not happen though, like, ever .

How much does a gantry with VMS cost, roughly, for a standard 2x2 highway with no major space constraints to attach the base?

I totally agree, keep speed limits as simple as possible. And if, for some reason, there is a need to lower (or raise) the normal limit, it should actually be done to make a difference. 120 vs 130 doesn't.

The handicapped vehicles are shockingly dangerous.

Is there a breakdown of causes for these deaths too?

A4 Benelux - Klaaswaal

There is a new lobby to construct the last missing link of A4: Benelux - Klaaswaal south of Rotterdam. It consists of six Dutch and Belgian provinces.

I applaud it in theory, but not if it ends up leading to some kind of ridiculously over-expensive semi-tunnel project like the Delfland section.

What I don't understand is GroenLinks complaint about extra pollution. That missing link will shorten total travel distance and travel distance through build-up areas considerably, which I'd say is a good thing.

Of course a cost benefit analysis coupled with a local pollution study is needed, but I'm all for it. That stretch of road will also improve the traffic situation for the towns of Oud-Beijerland and Spijkenisse a lot.

I think it requires two tunnels, under de Oude Maas and Spui. Additionally, it would preferably require a replacement of the Haringvliet Bridge with a wider span. The current span is obsolete in terms of design standards.

What is the status of the Blakenburg tunnel project?

A28 southwest of Zwolle was flooded today after a series of severe thunderstorms.

Funny how the other half of the carriageway remains dry. Must be a serious design fault going on...

It's a case of fault by design in this case
