N201 Amstel Aquaduct

The Amstel Aquaduct opened to traffic today. It's located north of Uithoorn and is the final segment of the N201+ project. The N201+ project was the largest road project ever undertaken by a province, costing € 650 million. Traffic from Vinkeveen now bypasses the busy segments in Uithoorn and Aalsmeer, bypassing Schiphol Airport on a new alignment, plus a new interchange with A4.

Opening ceremony:

The blonde is minister of transportation, Melanie Schultz. She does a great job improving mobility in the Netherlands, and continues the pro-roads approach of her precedessor Camiel Eurlings.

No doubt. I love tunnels covered with ceramic tiles. They give a special luminosity and reflectance to tunnels.

I'm now used at the low-key profile most politicians keep at ribbon-cutting ceremonies in Netherlands. No big fanfare, no special government band as clothing or heavy security.

What's the purpose of the concrete road on the right? It looks too wide to be for bikes.

You can see a bus on the 2nd pic and you can red "bus" in white letters on the 4th pic.

It's a bus rapid transit system called Zuidtangent (officially R-net, but Zuidtangent is often used).

They don't half clutter these roads with directional signs. Again - I don't like the new lay-out at all.

N201+ project

A video of the completed € 650 million N201+ project. It's a bypass of Aalsmeer, but also improves access to Schiphol Airport and Hoofddorp. This is a densely populated area with a lot of business activities (including the largest flower auction in the world which produces 8,000+ truckloads per day) and Schiphol Airport.

Very nice movie which shows a huge improvement this new road brings to through traffic.

A4 Hoofddorp

A pano of the A4 at Hoofddorp (just south of Amsterdam), looking south. There are 16 lanes at this section, of which 14 lanes are through lanes.

At any rate, they could fix the N201 markers. They read like "N2 01" now.

I'm curious, why is Aalsmeer Centrum greyed out on these signs?

It was added later. Aalsmeer complained that there was no direction for the centre of Aalsmeer, so they added 'Aalsmeer-Centrum' in a slightly smaller font, with different reflection (causing it to look grey) and in a place on the sign there is usually no destination.

The first hectometer poles with a 130 km/h speed limit sign have been installed along A15
