A 2+1 road would be excellent, but Dutch traffic planners don't seem to very interested in that type of road.

I'd love to see some major land reclamation projects on the Markermeer

It was planned to reclaim pretty much the entire Markermeer als the Markerwaard, hence the name 'Houtribdijk' (dike). A dike usually separates water and dry land. The Houtribdijk separates two large lakes.

Many people still refer to both lakes as the 'IJsselmeer' (Lake IJssel) though. The southern part is known as the 'Markermeer' (Lake Marken).

I hope that they keep the lakes as they are. Holland is proud of its waters, and it attracts tourism. We've got the Flevopolder and the Noordoostpolder, that should be enough.

There are tunnel problems in the greater Amsterdam area. Currently 3 of the 5 road tunnels under the IJ River / North Sea Canal are closed.

They have a rather nasty problem in the Velsen Tunnel (A22), they had a blackout for a while (possibly due to lightning), so the pumps didn't work during heavy rainshowers. However, they can't reopen the tunnel until they find out the cause of the power outage.

The Zeeburg Tunnel (A10) is closed due to planned maintenance. An accident occurred in the Wijker Tunnel (A9), so the pressure is on the new Coen Tunnel. All closures are southbound (Velsen Tunnel both directions).

tilting sluice vs aquaduct

A proposed new solution in the Netherlands, the tilting sluice (kantelsluis). A possible alternative for an aquaduct. It has a neutral energy balance, and can be applied at existing bascule bridges. Most bascule bridges in the Netherlands only open for yachts, commercial shipping can usually pass under bridges without having to open them. This solution has been proposed for the Haringvliet Bridge (A29) south of Rotterdam.

The Noordoost- and Flevopolders were created because there was a need for farmland. That situation has reversed: farmland a-plenty and climate change might lead to a shortage of fresh water. So the Markermeer will stay a lake, at least for the time being.

I was thinking in terms of housing.

Before reclaiming new land for housing, you'd better fill up the part you already have... the Flevopolder seems pretty empty

2015 budget

Negotiations over the 2015 budget are reported to be running smoothly. The 2015 budget is the first in quite a number of years to have less fiscal stress, the budget deficit has been reduced to under 3% and tax revenue is up. Although it won't be a spending craze, it doesn't appear to have any new budget cuts.

Several road projects were postponed in previous budgets, some of them shovel-ready. There are no signs for further cuts in the road budget.

The final budget, including the MIRT highway construction programme, will be unveiled in September, an event known as prince's day

One of the most strange things I've come across on political workings of Netherlands is the annual cycle of "budget leaks", it is almost an official thing, every year the budget is "leaked" to major newspapers, and it appears to be something expected, even predicted ("when the budget is leaked next week we'll have a better assessment of xyz").

Suburbanist is a big fan of suburbs in the style of the US: big extravagant housing with large gardens and extensive road infrastructure to link them all up.

I've told him already if he wants to live like that, he needs to emigrate. Because it ain't happening here.

I would hate the Netherlands to go suburban. At the moment aprox 15% of NL is built up area. If NL would go suburban that would become something like 70%. I like the more compact, policentric layout here.

Most of the Netherlands is de-facto suburban, just in another form than in the United States. Most housing was built after 1950, mostly single-family housing in the form of relatively compact rowhouses.

A4, Roelofarendsveen

The 'ringvaart-aquaduct' near Roelofarendsveen in March 2014. It was expanded in 2010. The new aquaduct has space for 5 lanes, like all new construction on A4 in this area.

If anyone needs direct updates about the Neherkade project in Den Haag, this is my actual view right now...
