Are there other examples of a 'rijksweg' that is not a road number? I thought a 'rijksweg' that is a highway is automatically a 'A-road' and an 'N-road' when it's not a highway.

In fact, I think it makes more sense to indicate the A4-number on the road signs north of Sabina than A59.

A/N18 is numbered as rijksweg 15, but not signed as such.

Interesting. I never knew there was a distinction. So if I'm correct the A29 is Rijksweg 29 between Vaanplein and Klaaswaal and Rijksweg 4 between Klaaswaal and Hellegatsplein but nevertheless singed A29 all the way.

So between Hellegatsplein and Sabina it's officially double numbered Rijksweg 4 and 59 but singed as A29 and A59.

Never be sure about that !

I checked the thermometer and it shows 2 degrees, it felt rather cold though. I had to wipe the windshield when driving this afternoon. It stayed on the side of the windshield though, so it had to be snow.

Eindhoven region

The 'square of Eindhoven' will not be continued for the time being. A majority in parliamented voted to end the national funding for the project, which went through years of development, but lost regional support. The plan - as stated before - was to build a new east-west 80 km/h expressway from A50 to N279, and twinning of N279 from there south to A67 to a 80 km/h expressway.

The plan was already criticized for having a lack of ambition, with a € 900 million price tag for a slow-speed expressway.

The project had co-funding in the amount of € 260 million available from the national government. That funding will now be withdrawn. The funding will be directed towards the widening of both A58 and A67.

Technically the plan could still proceed if Noord-Brabant province decides to bridge the € 260 million gap, but that seems very unlikely.

N33 Zuidbroek - Appingedam

Parliament also voted in favor of a motion that would make transportation minister Schultz to get an agreement with Groningen province on the twinning of N33 from A7 (Zuidbroek) to Appingedam, before the end of the year.

Groningen province is willing to finance this project, but doesn't want to pay VAT over the project cost, some € 16 million. Schultz wanted Groningen to pay for the full price as this project is very, very low on the priority list of the national government.

An odd gap there in the South... Also, Harderwijk looks like a potential bottleneck.

N302 through Harderwijk has been upgraded to 2x2 with interchanges a couple of years ago. You can go free-flow through Harderwijk, except for traffic lights at the A28 interchange.

Was there a further extension of the N46 planned north of Groningen? The N46/N370 junction looks like a planned cloverleaf.

Yes, among other things. The 1969 regional plan of Groningen was quite ambitious. You can find the current ring in this plan as well, but a lot more motorways were originally planned:

A27/A28 Rijnsweerd interchange

The minister of transportation Melanie Schultz picked variant 4c as the preferred alternative for the reconstruction of the Rijnsweerd motorway interchange. It is part of the widening and unweaving of A27 along the eastern side of Utrecht. The interchange will be a split in character, while retaining access to and from all directions.

Rijnsweerd is one of the worst congestion spots in the Netherlands, especially during evening rush hour. I know a guy who commutes through that interchange on a daily basis and he often experiences delays of over 30 minutes going through there (from east to south).

Variant 4c:

traffic safety

A problem in the Netherlands is people trying to make a U-turn on two-lane highways. This is illegal on express roads and discouraged on other 80 km/h roads.

Just recently, 4 seniors got killed in Drenthe in such an accident. They missed the exit to their reading club, and decided to make a uey about 500 meters down the road. Because Dutch roads are too narrow for a quick U-turn, you need to make a three-point turn. Just when their car was perpendicular to the road, they got hit by a semi truck, completely destroying the vehicle and killing all four occupants.
