A very nice gif displaying the amount of vehicles per lane using induction loop data. Data is per hour (00h = 0:00 - 0:59, 01h = 1:00 - 1:59 etc. etc.). Oversimplified: everywhere where blue pops up is oversaturated with traffic.

Snow showers resulted in a lot of traffic congestion this morning, especially in central Netherlands.

All northbound motorways were severely congested:

* A16 at Dordrecht: 16 km
* A27 at Gorinchem: 22 km
* A2 at Everdingen: 32 km
* A50 at Ewijk: 16 km

A2 southbound was congested as well:

Overall congestion was not extreme though; 300 km at its peak. Busy, but far from extreme.

I love it when the signs over your head display a speed you can only dream of achieving. Just turn that shit off already.

At least the speed limit is 50 in stationary traffic in the Netherlands unlike in Germany on some autobahns where you are limited to 40 when standing still.

Number of jerkoffs per traffic jam that are constantly changing lanes because they think it makes a difference.

But seriously... shortly after the video there was a heavy fall. I had to do a 270 loop to the A4 and was stuck behind a car that refused to break 30 kph. I'm not an agressive driver but found myself hanging on his bumper untill I could pass. Some drivers here are way over cautious.

There is no separate minimum thread depth for winter tires, so the regular 1.6 mm applies to them as well, since winter tires are not mandatory. But it is recommended to have at least 4 mm of thread depth.

A16 Van Brienenoord Bridge, Rotterdam

The Van Brienenoord Bridge (A16) in Rotterdam turns 50 today. It is the busiest bridge in the Netherlands with 237,000 vehicles per day on 12 lanes. It is part of the eastern ring road of Rotterdam.

The bridge has a long history. Plans were made for a river crossing at this location in the 1930s and a right-of-way was acquired in 1941. The first part of A16 opened to traffic in 1943. World War II however delayed the bridge project until the 1960s.

The first span, with six lanes, opened to traffic on 1 February 1965. It is a combination of an arch bridge with a bascule bridge for tall ships. Although built with an initial capacity of six lanes (a fairly new concept at the time), it was quickly overwhelmed with traffic, and a decision was made in 1979 to build a second span. The second span was built between 1986 and 1990 and opened to traffic on 1 May 1990, doubling capacity to twelve lanes.

Here's a picture of the second span nearing completion.

A9 Badhoevedorp

New aerial photos of the A9 under construction around Badhoevedorp, just outside Amsterdam. The A9 will be build on a new six-lane alignment outside the town of Badhoevedorp.

1. View across the new alignment south of Badhoevedorp. The 12 lane A4 in the foreground.

2. New bridge supports for A9, which will cross the A4 at a new angle.

3. The Badhoevedorp cloverleaf. A9 will split off to the upper right, close to those office buildings.

4. The new interchange for Badhoevedorp, just before it merges onto the existing A9.

A6 Holland Bridge, Almere

The beams for the new 'Holland Bridge' or 'Hollandsebrug' were installed recently. It is part of the A6 motorway expansion from six to ten lanes.

A7/A8 Purmerend - Amsterdam

Road authority Rijkswaterstaat has awarded the construction of shoulder lanes along A7 and A8 between Purmerend and Amsterdam to BAM. They will design and construct the shoulder lanes. The first visible construction will be just before the summer holidays, and the shoulder lane will go into operation late 2015.

A local snow shower left the A50 totally iced between Nijmegen and Eindhoven. Just after 6 p.m. there was a 39 kilometer traffic jam southbound and 34 kilometer traffic jam northbound. Because it was a stationary traffic jam, they could not do any snow removal. It's almost 10 p.m. and there is still a total standstill on A50, they closed the motorway for all traffic and only leave the exits open so traffic can slowly leave the motorway. Delays of over 3 hours were reported. Trucks weren't able to cross even the slightest inclines.

In other news, a severe truck crash on A1 near Holten left one trucker dead, his cabin was literally decimated after crashing into a tanker truck.

That happened at speed (well, no sh!t, Sherlock): apart from the collapsed trailer wall, note how the diesel tank and the pipes were completely shifted out of place.
