The lane might be closed further upstream? You can't say she's/he's a nutter just by a single picture.

On the other side of that viaduct the pic was taken from the left lane merges. Therefor I'm going to bet €50 on 'hey look, that sign 200 meters ahead says merge in 300 meters. Better start merging now!'

Maybe he is making that move because the signalling system (which we can't see in this picture) is indicating that the third lane he was on should merge right since it might be closed a little further up that road.

Yeah of course you can't see it. That stretch doesn't even have MTM.

traffic in 2014

The annual report of the national road network has been published today.

This data is only for the 'rijkswegen' (the motorway network plus a few select N-roads).

Traffic congestion development:

Vehicle kilometers (rijksweg only)

2014 saw a record high usage of the motorway network at 66.3 billion kilometers, a growth of 2.0% compared to 2013. Traffic congestion in 2014 was flat, a reduction of less than 1% and a growth in the last quarter of 2014. This ends the traffic congestion reduction which started in 2007. Not much new capacity was added in 2014.

Traffic congestion due to road works decreased by 15.3%. Only 4.3% of traffic congestion is caused by road works. Traffic congestion due to accidents increased to 18.2%.

The number of routes with a travel time index of more than 1.5 grew from 10 to 13. There were 31 routes with a TTI of over 1.5 in 2008. The reliability of travel time during rush hours was 94%. This was 80% in 2008.

Meh, all the better for people who aren't afraid to merge in at the end of the lane . Gladly overtake those idiots who merge early.

N279 's-Hertogenbosch - Veghel

The first works have started to reconstruct N279 between A2 at 's-Hertogenbosch and A50 at Veghel to a four-lane, controlled-access highway. It will be designed for 100 km/h, but kept at 80 km/h for the time being, as they are afraid it will attract too much truck traffic (makes sense, right? )

There will be 2x2 lanes, 4 new interchanges. The A2 and A50 interchanges will remain with traffic lights. The planned completion date is November 2017, but Noord-Brabant province has hinted the new capacity may become available in 2016.

That expansion is badly needed. Good to see them (finally) making the road a 2 x 2 instead of the current way to small road.

N382 Coevorden

Coevorden is a small town (pop. 14,000) but has two grade-separated bypasses. The main one is the N34 which carries interregional traffic. The other is N382, a super two around the eastern and northern part of Coevorden.

The video begins in Germany at the B403 and continues into the Netherlands, and onto N382, the Coevorden bypass.

When they first adopted these variable speed limits (day/night/weekends) on highways, I read some were fearing confusion and that many people would get fined. Then, they reduced the plethora of limits and now things are more uniform. How have speeding ticket issuance changed, now that 130 km/h has been with us for couple years?

Rotterdamsebaan, The Hague

The Council of State has dismissed most appeals against the construction of the 'Rotterdamsebaan', a new four-lane tunnel that connects The Hague with A13/A4 at the Ypenburg motorway interchange. The tunnel will relieve the A12 'Utrechtsebaan'. Some minor details need to be changed, but the tunnel received the green light. No further appeal is possible.

Dogbone

I am in a middle of making some research on the dogbone interchanges. One source shows a nice one in the Netherlands:

The source does not tell where this interchange is located. Does anyone know?
