9? Oh cool! I've travelled back in time to 2004

I knew going 88mph on the new stretch of A4 would work out! Oh no wait, now I'm in 2004 and there's no A4

That new stretch of the A4 between Bergen op Zoom en Dinteloord works so well to connect the ports and regions of Rotterdam and Antwerp. So much better then the old connection by local roads. Traffic is still quite low from what I have seen. But no doubt that will pick up of time quite rapidly.

A4 Kethel Tunnel

The A4 tunnel at Schiedam will be called the 'Kethel Tunnel' (Dutch: Ketheltunnel). It is named after the former village of Kethel, which is now a part of Schiedam. The nearby A4/A20 interchange is also called the 'Kethelplein'. It is pronounced rather similar as the 'Ketelbrug' in Dutch. (Ketel instead of Ket-hel). The pronunciation is well-known outside the area due to the frequent mentioning of the Kethelplein motorway interchange in traffic reports on the radio.

N366-N391, Ter Apel

The provinces of Groningen and Drenthe reached a deal to construct a trumpet interchange between N366 and N391 near Ter Apel. The projected cost is € 4.5 million.

It is part of a larger long-term project to turn both N366 and N391 into grade-separated provincial roads. Both routes are used by interregional traffic. The N391 - N379 interchange will also be grade-separated.

A59, 's-Hertogenbosch

The A59 crosses the Máxima Canal at 's-Hertogenbosch. The canal will be inaugurated soon (it is already in operation). The A59 bridge was built before they began the canal project, as part of the 's-Hertogenbosch bypass expansion project.

Well, sir, there's nothing on earth like a genuine, bona fide, electrified, six-car monorail!

A1-A9 Diemen

The new A1-A9 mega interchange at Diemen. The Diemen motorway interchange is currently a trumpet interchange, but will become three motorway splits, including two bridges across the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal.

A50 Tacitus Bridge

The Tacitus Bridge (A50 near Nijmegen) has been expanded with a new span. The old 1976 bridge is currently being renovated. A tricky job is the replacement of the cables. As you can see in this photo, the nearest tower has its cables softened for replacement. It's a job that has rarely been done before in Europe. It takes more time than expected. It was originally planned for completion in 2014, but currently late 2015 or 2016 seems more likely.

N33 Zuidbroek - Appingedam

The national government and Groningen province have signed a deal to finance the twinning of N33 from Zuidbroek (A7) to Appingedam. It will be reconstructed from a two-lane express road to a four-lane controlled access highway with a length of 20 kilometers.

The budget is € 100 million. Groningen pays € 89 million, the government pays € 11 million. Although this is a national road, the project is being expedited by Groningen province.

Singe Groningen province has a lot of earthquakes, have they changed seismic fitting guidelines for bridges?

The Groningen earthquakes are shallow and local. Their magnitude rarely exceeds 3.0, I doubt if they need upgraded seismic standards. In most countries a 3.0 magnitude earthquake would not make the news, but these are caused by extraction of natural gas, so they are shallow and easier felt than regular tectonic earthquakes of this magnitude. It's not like California or Japan where earthquakes in excess of 7.0 magnitude are possible.

N50 Ens - Emmeloord

The first sod has been turned on the widening of N50 today. The N50 will be widened from 2x1 to 2x2 lanes between Ens and Emmeloord. A new partial interchange will also be constructed south of the Emmeloord motorway interchange to allow quicker access to and from Emmeloord from the south. Four lanes will be available by late 2015. The interchange will be completed early 2016.

N50 Ens - Emmeloord

I took some photos of this stretch of N50 in 2009. It's an easy widening, there are already shoulders, which will become driving lanes. However, they do need to widen the cross-section to conform to current design standards. Plus they need a full-depth reconstruction of the pavement. That's why it will take some 8-9 months to widen it.

I believe that the requirements for getting that color are grade seperation and not necessarily 2x2 lanes*. So it's correct since the N50 is already grade seperated.

* This is the case for GMaps, I here blindly assume this is also the case for Apple Maps
