A4 north of Leiden in the 1960s. The exact date is unknown, but it is strange that the pavement has already cracked, this section opened in 1960, so this pavement wasn't very old, likely even less than 10 years old. Also, note the dangerous merge.

How long was the Dutch motorways network in the 1960's?

This is near Maarssen(broek).

And to be frank, I'd rather drive on the A4 Schiphol - Burgerveen section than on the A2.
The A4 offers 2x5 lanes with a 130 km/h (80 mph) speed limit around the clock. No need for a dull ride at only 100 km/h (62 mph) enforced by section control.

NL really needs some updated tunnel laws. This 2+1 is a very poor solution. Wonder how many people will drive over the solid white lines.

No A20: Capelle/Gouda exit ?

I know it's a bit further, but I'd like to have the choice of A13 or A4 depending on traffic!

N471 Rotterdam - Pijnacker

I filmed the provincial road N471. It runs from A20 at Rotterdam to Pijnacker. It includes two 'turboplein' roundabouts, the largest type (explained in the video). They seem confusing from an aerial view, but are quite self-explanatory. Just follow the overhead signs, pick the lane you want and stay in it.

The route of N471 was once planned to be a motorway from Rotterdam to Wassenaar (A14). It was never built, except for a short stretch in Rotterdam.

I drive this route quite often when commuting from Rotterdam to The Hague v.v. if the A20 and A13 are jammed up, but then via Hillegersberg not from the A20.
It's an excellent alternative route.

Isn't the two-lane stretch overwhelmed with traffic during rush hour?

This was my first time driving there, I don't know how it flows during rush hour, but since A13 is among the most congested motorways in the country, you'd think many people would use N471 to get around the congestion.

It's usually pretty good even in rush hour ( the worst section usually being around the Molenlaan).
I have seen the N470 section approaching the A13 jammed up, but that's the exception not the rule. Certainly not a congested route at all.

Edit: The same can also be said for the N219 between the A12 and A20. This is also a much used alternative (by me) with minimal congestion usually.

The A4 opening later this year will reduce pressure on A13, meaning there's less incentive to use N471 and/or N470 as an alternate route.

Your definition of ''pretty good'' is different from mine, I work on the Terbregseweg 4 days per week, and my definition of the stretch between Terbregge and the Roundabout on the Molenlaan is ''a catastrophe'' or ''a disgrace'' .

Around 5.30 pm it can take as much as 45 minutes to get from Alexander to Hillegersberg! There have been days I've done an hour over that bit with the tailback as far as the A20 exit alexander/Capelseweg, all over the Hoofdweg, into Hillegersberg all the way up to that first roundabout where the tram ends .

From about 17.30 to about 18.45 you do not want to be on the road there! I've been very lucky my work times have been adjusted to start at 19.15, and I arrive just after the traffic has more or less cleared and is free flowing.

With "Pretty good" I was meaning the route with the exception of the section you're talking about. I agree, the route from Terbrechtseweg is slow going most of the time.

Bike.
You don't need to use a car just for Alexander-Hillegersberg.
