So only in NL? Around the Mittelland canal near Magdeburg there are also many places that would be called Aquaduct in the Netherlands. But I Guess they are not called that there.

There are a number of structures around the world that could be a Dutch-style aquaduct. In most cases they are called a tunnel or underpass. The Main-Donau Canal in Bavaria has a number of them.

There is one on the recently built A-30 in the greater Montreal, Canada area, prominently signed as "Tunnel de Soulanges", carrying the local canal. But it is definitely Dutch-style aquaduct.

It's only an aquaduct when the water is 'ducted'. When it's just a tunnel going underneath a body of water, it's a tunnel. However, in The Netherlands we have a tendency to call any tunnel underneath water an aquaduct.

Drachtsterweg, Leeuwarden

A new interchange along the Drachtsterweg in Leeuwarden opened to traffic last evening. This means traffic coming from N31 into Leeuwarden can bypass another set of traffic lights.

The interchange only partially opened because the new aquaduct behind it is not finished and won't be for a while. Traffic will continue to use the old bridge for the time being.

N237, Soesterberg

Construction will start on 26 October on a project to put four-lane N237 in Soesterberg in a trench and put a cap on a part of it. The tunnel will be 210 m long, bypassing one intersection (and building one new overpass). Construction is very fast, completion is planned for May 2016, so a construction time of only 7 months to build a 210 m long tunnel.

A12 Galecopper Bridge, Utrecht

Another aerial view of the Galecopper Bridge across the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal in Utrecht. It is part of the A12 motorway. It also shows the expanded capacity near the interchange west of the bridge, with dedicated bus lanes. The photo is looking north.

It's Europe's most densely populated country, sometimes you have to be inventive.

N381 Drachten - Oosterwolde

The new alignment of the N381 expressway partially opened to traffic yesterday in Friesland province. It runs from Wijnjewoude to Donkerbroek (circa 5.5 km). According to the press release, only the westbound carriageway opened to traffic with 2 lanes, but this photo shows an interchange where traffic uses both carriageways with one lane each.

It will be released this afternoon. I don't expect wild changes. The major things have all been leaked and additional funding for infrastructure was not among it.

Spiering Bridge, Muiden

The local bridge, called the 'Spiering Bridge' will open to traffic on 18 September. It is an 'unbalanced bridge', a drawbridge that works with oil pressure hydraulics. They wanted a characteristic bridge. The A1 motorway bridge visible in the Google Earth imagery will be demolished once the new alignment of 12-lane A1 opens to traffic.

Here's an aerial photo of the Spiering Bridge:

'Spiering' is a fish species, known as Smelt in English. There was a lot of fishing in / from Muiden. Inhabitants of the town were nicknamed 'Spieringen' in the early days.

Isn't there an "arms race" for "signature bridges" and expensive acquaducts in the Netherlands right now?

I'm under the impression every village now wants roads to be put under, not over, courses of water, or that bridges be beautiful instead of just functional.

There aren't that many landmark projects in terms of architecture. Some were even dropped (A6 Holland Bridge near Almere).

What does happens however, is a large pressure to reduce the impact of new or expanded infrastructure far beyond the mitigation measures required by environmental laws. Nearly all land tunnels were constructed in the past decade, which has cost billions more than if it was constructed at ground level, while still meeting all environmental criteria.

Budget 2016

The 2016 budget has been unveiled.

The infrastructure fund has the lowest amount since the introduction of the euro, at € 5.8 billion (tied with 2005). The road budget is € 2.0 billion, which is nearly a third less than the average in the 2010-2014 period.

The highest budget for the infrastructure fund since 2002 was in 2011 at € 8.3 billion. The budget has fluctuated over the years, depending on the financial need and budget cuts.

Expenditure by year (not adjusted for inflation)

N7 Groningen

The Council of State issued an intermediate verdict on the reconstruction of N7 through the northern city of Groningen.

Most appeals were rejected. Some (relatively minor) issues need to be repaired within 24 weeks. The expansion project itself was left intact. There is no need to redo the procedures.

Under the project, N7 will be reconstructed to an eight-lane expressway with two short tunnels and an elevated stretch across the Julianaplein intersection with A28. The project cost is € 666 million (€ 120 million per kilometer).

What's the difference to motorway standard, the distance between exits?

The geometry and lane width (which in turns leads to a lower speed limit). A motorway standard road through there would prove prohibitively expensive and would reduce access to it. Some 80% of traffic on N7 has an origin or destination in Groningen, that's why a new motorway alignment south of Groningen wouldn't solve much problems.
