How about moving to less densely populated parts of the Netherlands?

My family already lives in a quite 'desolate' place. (for dutch standards) It's nice there, but a bit boring and it's more difficult to find work on reasonable travel times. Also: things like criminality are nowadays on the countryside not much less than in the cities. Sometimes even worse.

And public transport is horrible on the countryside. Ok, there are no buses at all now, but that's because of the strikes

Before 2007 I used to have only a service which ran 5 times a day.

But I own a car now, since about a month. Can't express you my happiness about that.

I live in a quite rural place too, but not so desolated (still Randstad). Public transport is quite good, especially the trains, but this is going to change in some time.
@Jeroen669: Are you from the Achterhoek?

Some nice pics of the A2 widening:

Between Utrecht and Amsterdam, on the left the new carriageway:

The A2/A67, south of Eindhoven. On the right the future parallel lanes and in the distance the new fly-overs at De Hogt junction.

There was a huge accident on the A4 today, near Hoofddorp (A4/A5 interchange). All traffic to Amsterdam was shut down. All 5 lanes closed. Lots of ambulances, helicopter, fire brigade were all present. When I drove past it, it seemed very servere, but later I read it was not that big. Just 4 cars, and 5 injured. Still it was an awful sight.

Today I found a new route to drive home by bike from my school. I don't know if I'm allowed to do it, but it's way shorter. I drove some nice 4 km on the new A2 by bike! The section between Breukelen and Vinkeveen. Tomorrow I will do it again, and try to make some pics. Does anyone know when this section is opened for traffic?

I will repeat it over and over, the only solution is to wide roads.

Actually, the A12 needs widening desperatly east of Utrecht. At least 2x3 lanes, but 2x4 is even better. The road handles over 100,000 vehicles per day on 2x2 lanes.

At first I thought you drove by bike on an open motorway!

There were some cars actually, but they were from the workmen who work over there

This is the famous Bunnik bottleneck, which gives a lot of trouble (srry for the bad quality):

The A2 metamorphosis, section Amsterdam-Utrecht, in three stages:

Top: The old motorway next to the bodies of sand for the new carriageway.
Middle: Traffic has been moved to the new carriageway on the left, the old route will be reconstructed into the northbound direction.
Bottom: Widening completed, the A2 is ready for the future

You drawed the lanes too wide. They should be nearly half as wide i think. The sand body does not necessarily covers the future roadway, it's usually wider.
