This new bridge, when finished, will bring much relieve to the A12 with much less local traffic merging in and out on a very short stretch of this congested highway.

A1, Muiden

New photos of 'Aquaduct Vechtzicht', a 12 lane section of motorway that passes under the Vecht River near the town of Muiden, just east of Amsterdam.

What is the reason of the multi-colour cladding?

Perhaps multiple different contractors working on that piece?

Traffic fatalities in 2015 went up to 621, a significant growth from 570 in 2014.

When looking at data, traffic fatalities went up among roads with nearly every type of speed limit. However, when looking at age, virtually all growth in fatalities was among people aged 60+, especially the increase among 80+ is alarming. Meanwhile the long-term trend that young drivers are most commonly killed in traffic is showing a strong decrease (despite all the stories about distracted driving among this phone-addicted age group).

Is this about motor vehicles or general road traffic? I remember you mentioned the problem of old people involved in bike accidents.

Well, sir, there's nothing on earth like a genuine, bona fide, electrified, six-car monorail!

Due to Photobucket f*cking up, most images won't be visibile in my old posts. If you need anything specific, please write me.

All traffic fatalities, regardless of mode of transportation. Bicycle accidents are a major factor among the elderly. The reduction of bicycle fatalities has been stagnating for some time, while the fatality rate among car occupants has dropped significantly.

Well, there are more and more old people, and more and more active old people, so yeah they get killed. It would be interesting to see these data standardized to the age cohorts.

A12 Ede - Arnhem

Some photos of the A12 widening from Ede to Arnhem. A12 is being widened from four to six lanes to the Grijsoord motorway interchange. It's a quick job, most work is done within a year.

There is even a 120 km/h workzone speed limit. Only a short section near the Oosterbeek interchange had a reduced speed.

You have to take into account that old people on average drive way less kilometers and less frequently, since they do not need it for daily commute.

There should be serious medical checks and reclassification above 70 years.

I wonder about these things
On one hand I once had a old man make a left turn from right lane, while I was in left lane and hit me, and I had to chase him down in parking lot, when I said that he hit me, he said "no I didn't!"
some of these people have really lost their mental acuity...

on the other hand though if they drive rarely... it's important to be mobile...

A30 Barneveld - Ede

I took a trip yesterday and took some photos of A30 from the three overpasses that cross this motorway.

A30 is an 18 kilometer motorway that links A1 at Barneveld and A12 at Ede. Its precursor was a provincial road that opened in 1972 between A1 and Lunteren. It wasn't until 2003-2004 that the entire A30 was completed as a motorway. Traffic volumes quickly picked up, exceeding 50,000 vehicles per day within a few years.

Present-day traffic volumes fluctuate between 55,000 and 63,000 vehicles per day. It is the main link between Amersfoort and Arnhem, but is also a good route for traffic from Amsterdam to Arnhem, the Ruhr Area and beyond.

1. The overpass of the Barneveld-Noord interchange.

2. A30 ends just north of this interchange. There are traffic lights from A30 to A1. It is a substandard motorway-to-motorway interchange. There are no serious plans to improve that, despite frequent calls in the media and parliament. It isn't considered a bottleneck.

The amount of fines issued by a police officer by pulling anyone over has been reduced significantly.

In 2007, 1.5 million fines were issued by police officers, by pulling people over on the highway or stopping people otherwise (not just traffic fines). That amount dropped by more than 80%, to 240,000 fines issued by police officers in 2015.

Also, some 97% of traffic fines were issued through automated systems (mostly speed cameras). The police is afraid they lose authority when the judicial system becomes one automated process with no human interaction as to why someone was pulled over. The system is already frequently characterized as a 'fine factory' (Dutch: bonnenfabriek).

The chance of getting caught while driving distracted or dangerous driving is close to zero because offenses like that cannot be automatically enforced, like speed cameras or red light cameras.

A12 Ede / Wageningen

I also took some photos of A12 at the Ede / Wageningen interchange. This section had a 'plus lane' added in 2009. It's a left shoulder that dynamically opens to traffic. It is where the current 2x3 widening (regular lanes) to Arnhem starts.

A VMS displayed 'politiecontrole' (police check) over A4 yesterday. In this sense, it's usually understood as a speed check. The result? A 20 kilometer traffic jam, despite the fact that it is vacation in the Netherlands.

What is the purpose of that compared to just having it as a normal lane? I understand why you would have shoulder running only at peak times but not this... especially if it then becomes a normal 2x3 road
