^ You can't get out of an 86-km jam in 30 min.

No okay but this is not daily (thank god), and there was a total of 86km around Rotterdam. The problem is that interchanges in Rotterdam are not far apart, and if you have a 23 km traffic jam (which was the longest individual one), you'll block like 4 other motorways, which will be jammed too, hence the gridlock.

^ So you don't fall in a traffic jam that often?

Not such a mess daily. However, some people have to cope daily with over an hour delay each way, especially in the Randstad, and the motorways leading towards it. Remember most of our traffic jams are in rural area's, where the freeways are only 2x2 lanes. A traffic jam is much harder to dissipate on a 2x2 motorway than say; a 2x4 or 2x5 motorway.

And that's why there are lots of plans of widening 2+2 highways into 3+3, and why we are widening the A2, for instance.

Actually, Secretary of Transport just announced he wants to widen many freeways in the next few years. They are talking about 40 bottlenecks. I really hope his words can be translated into deeds, since we've heard this kind of talk before.

Okay, check it out.

Travel time comparison from the most common commutertowns around Zwolle to the largest job center in the whole region.

Does this suggest bus or train?

Any PT, the fastest possible option has been taken.

Though Zwolle has like the 2nd largest radiating network of railways, most places use the bus. Problem is that the station-station travel time is very fast, though you need additional transport which is much slower/less efficient.

^ How about walking from the station? Distances can't be that big in Zwolle.

People rarely walk more than a km or something since the popularity of cycling, here.

On Chris' list it's maybe also nice to compare that. Multiply the distances by three (= 20km/h on average, which is reasonable) and you see even up to 20km cycling is mostly faster than PT.

That's also why I like to bike to school. It takes me 45 mins. Bus takes 30 mins, but is always 5-10 mins late. On the way back you often have to wait for more than 20 mins, so I prefer the bike.

I made 2 video's of nice scenery here in the region.

Zalkerdijk: A dike of the river IJssel. The dike has a road on top, it's windy, it's curvy and it has bad pavement. Check it out.

Zwartendijk: A highly debated area for new housing. Let me show you this video why they should construct those houses elsewhere.

N764/N331: The secondary (but shortest) road between Kampen and Zwolle. I drove faster than the speed limit here Speed limit was 80km/h.

I used to pass this intersection a lot.
