A6, Almere

A6 in Almere is closed in both directions this weekend so they can demolish a bridge at the 'Hogering' interchange (future Knooppunt Gooimeer). It's part of the Schiphol-Amsterdam-Almere megaproject.

Ergo, you still need a car.

The point of the joke was that a person who regularly (perhaps even daily, depending on their job) need to be in other provinces probably needs a car more than those who don't and that looking at per-capita-per-province spending on roads doesn't make a great deal of sense.

You punch of obsessive compulsive nitpickers. Jesus.

A4, Leiden

A4 at Leiden has long been the worst bottleneck in the Netherlands. It was an antiquated 1960s motorway with 2x2 lanes. It topped the annual traffic jam list for much of the last 30 years.

The A4 expansion was one of the most hotly contested road projects in the Netherlands, the final EIS was annulled in 2007, which was a turning point in Dutch road politics, new legislation was passed, resulting in clear environmental requirements. Basically no plans were annulled ever since.

A4 at Leiden was then expanded from 2x2 to 1+2+2+1 lanes, a design from the early 1990s. However it was built in a way that it could be expanded to 10 lanes without much trouble.

There was a construction phase in 2012 that had 2x3 lanes and 80 km/h. During this time, congestion was mostly eliminated. However, the final 1+2+2+1 configuration was not as fortunate, traffic congestion increased five-fold after completion, and A4 re-entered the annual traffic jam list at a high spot.

However, there may be good news. A motion was passed recently to add a third through lane at Leiden, creating a 1+3+3+1 configuration. Infrastructure & Environment minister has recently announced that she will initiate the procedures for a third lane 'as soon as possible'.

A third lane would be very easy to construct, the pavement is already there in the Limes Aquaduct, and a wide median is available elsewhere.

budget 2017

The 2017 budget is unveiled today.

There is not much news in regard to road projects. The 2017 MIRT programme doesn't include many new road projects. The most important new project is the A20 expansion east of Rotterdam, which is in planning phase.

The 2017 Infrastructure Fund amounts to € 5.9 billion, nearly similar to the 2016 budget. The road budget is € 2.35 billion, which is € 350 million higher than 2016. However, the road budget fluctuates from year to year, but on a somewhat downward trend since 2010 (€ 3 billion).

The Infrastructure Fund has fluctuated between € 5.8 and € 6.8 billion since 2013.

Here's an overview of the budget:

Article 17 'Megaprojects' is a miscellaneous group of transportation projects, designated as 'major projects' by parliament. These are often completed projects where some payment obligations are ongoing.

Included are;
– Westerschelde Tunnel
– Betuwe Route
– High-speed rail (HSL Zuid)
– Project Mainport development Rotterdam
– ERTMS
– ZuidasDok in Amsterdam

Article 12 'Main roads' include PPP payments. It amounts to € 731.5 million in 2017 (all projects, including water & rail).

That seems like a considerable sum to spend on waterways. Does it include related infrastructure? I'm sure a lock or a sluice would count, but what about an aquaduct or a bridge?

I think it includes bridges on non-rijkswegen that are operated by Rijkswaterstaat. Many bridges across canals are old and in need of replacement or renovation. € 367 million is budgeted for maintenance & replacement of waterways and € 186 million is budgeted for construction of waterways. Another € 296 million is operational cost incurred by Rijkswaterstaat.

However, water protection is funded through the Delta Fund since 2013. It has a budget of around € 1 billion (and is thus not included in the Infrastructure Fund since 2013).

A weird tradition on the budget unveiling day (prinsjesdag) is that all female MPs try to outdo eachother with strange hats.

left to right;
* Sharon Dijksma, state secretary of Infrastructure & Environment
* Melanie Schultz, minister of Infrastructure & Environment
* Lidewijde Ongering, secretary-general of the ministry of Infrastructure & Environment

The king & queen (#1&2 from the left)

Finally, also that so badly needed expansion is now on the agenda.

Indeed, though I fear A12 Bottlenecks again.

Still, the A20 possible expansion is great news, even westwards, that motorway is appalling in recent years, and the N219 alternative is also not a real alternative (due to congestion).

The A20 is probably the worst place in NL, part of it will be better with the A16/A13 link, but the other part also needs fixing.

While it's not ''standstill'' congestion it's a daily slow spot, especially near Terbregge and R'dam Centrum, and Nieuwerkerk/Moordrecht.

As for the A4 situation, while northbound will most likely greatly improve, southbound the bottleneck is not necessarily the 2+1 situation, but the merging later. Ideally you need 2x4 between Burgerveen and Ypenburg. Otherwise you'll just be shifting the bottleneck again. This bit of motorway was an absolute disgrace for such a densely populated area, should have been 2x4 of 2x5 20 years ago...

N34 Hardenberg - Coevorden

The Council of State has rejected the appeals against the reconstruction of N34 between Hardenberg and Coevorden to a 100 km/h, two-lane expressway.

It is part of a larger project to upgrade much of N34 between the N36 roundabout and Emmen. N34 is a provincial road, the verdict today concerns the stretch from Hardenberg to Coevorden in Overijssel province.

The reconstructed N34 will be upgraded from 80 to 100 km/h and all crossings and traffic lights will be replaced by underpasses and interchanges. It's the first provincial road in Overijssel to be upgraded to 100 km/h, after the large-scale decomissioning of 100 km/h roads in the early 2000s.

Rotterdam has a low emission zone that bans vehicles older than a certain model year. They installed gigantic black-white signs at entry roads.

A major truck crash into a traffic jam at the Joure roundabout (A6/A7) has caused at least one fatality. A truck crashed into stationary traffic and caught fire. One passenger car ended up underneath the truck, there is at least one fatality but it is unclear how many people were in the burned-out car. Another truck ended up on its side.

A new grade-separated, high-speed interchange is currently under construction to replace the roundabout. It is planned to open to traffic next year. The accident did not occur in the construction zone, however, as the new interchange is being built on a different location.

A1, Muiden

The abandoned segment of A1 near Muiden. They already began some demolition works, the barriers have been removed and the bridge is permanently open.

Regarding A1 in Muiden, what is going on here? The pattern is also on the other side of the canal.
