For the first time in years, the number of traffic jams decreased slightly with 3% in Q2.

Possible causes:

Last year had worse weather, much more rain, which decreases capacity of highways.

Rising fuel prices, they recorded less traffic jams on saturdays and sundays, this also proves my theory that the increase of fuel prices hits socio/recreational traffic first.

The traffic jams during the traditional morning- and eveningrushhour still increased, with 5.3% and 9% respectively.

How is the A35 Zwolle-Almelo progressing? It seems quite vital a connection in an area of the Netherlands where motorways are sparse.

It has been recently extended westward from Almelo to Wierden (only like 7km), however, there's little hope it would reach Zwolle soon. The N35 is considered a death road, and sees often congestion in Nijverdal, where the important road turns into a shopping street, and between Heino and Zwolle, and in the city of Zwolle itself.

However, traffic volumes are not high enough to justify a motorway, I think they should upgrade the entire road from Wijthmen to Nijverdal to a 2+1 road, and a tunnel through Nijverdal (planning phase right now), and 2x2 from Wijthmen to Zwolle, and a grade-separated below level 2x2 expressway in Zwolle.

However, the plans are different. They want to construct a tunnel under Nijverdal, but there's a lot of discussion if the tunnel should contain 2 or 4 lanes (I hope the latter ofcourse, a tunnel is hard to widen in the future), and extending the A35 from Wierden to that tunnel (about 4 - 5km).
In Zwolle, they're now started to widen the road to 6 lanes, however, I don't see the traffic jams dissapear, since you still have 10 traffic lights over a few kilometers.

The western part of the A35 (from Wierden to Almelo, West to East).

N348-N766 Ommen - Deventer
N382 German border - Coevorden
N48 Ommen - Hoogeveen
N347 Ommen-Nijverdal
N342 Hengelo - German border.

Over the top. What a kitschy entrance into Zwolle you have.

Maybe, I've never been close to Texas, so I've got to go there. Closest I've ever been to Texas was Atlanta I think.

That's like saying the closest you've been to Italy is the Netherlands

We copied the German U-routes to the Netherlands, they are "uitwijk" or alternative routes in case of major delays on the motorways. This one is odd, since they're not supposed to be integrated into the regular signage:

They're supposed to be like this:

You're copying a lot from Germany, but you should also copy the font-type (Mittelschrift) - it looks better with this font.

This is the new font - the older one looks better IMO

Yeah, this font is only used on non-"rijkswegen". It's just plain ugly and worse to read. They should've used to good old Interstate, DIN or Clearview.

VIDEO: A28 Meppel - Hoogeveen

A journey on the Eastbound A28 motorway from the regional town of Meppel to the regional town of Hoogeveen, both northeast of Zwolle. The video's are split into two parts, because it's together slightly longer than 10 minutes. The video ends at the A37 motorway near Hoogeveen-East.

It's best to watch them at my youtube page

A short drive over the N348 highway in the province of Overijssel. The drive goes southbound past Raalte towards Deventer.
