That bridge is nice, it should get special LED lighting that changes colors through the night and/or seasons (slowly, not a flash pattern that distracts drivers).

That's the sort of frivolous spending my fellow countrymen sadly look down on.

True, it is quickly labeled as 'unnecessary' and 'a waste of money'.

This is rather unusual considering the amount of money that is spend on maintaining the public space. The Netherlands is fairly neat and kept. But a public space like this A1, which will be used by some 350,000 people every single day, is not a part of that.

They could get Philips to sponsor the lighting of other bridges besides the one on A67.

A1/A6

The reversible lanes on A1/A6 opened to traffic today.

A video showcasing all branches (coming from A1/A9 to A6/N702).

Some notes;
* there will be 7 lanes of traffic on A1 during rush hour in one direction
* there will be 6 lanes of traffic on A6 during rush hour in one direction
* the reversible lanes will operate Amsterdam-bound during the morning and Almere-bound during the evening.
* future operations are chiefly Almere to A9 and vice versa.
* Almere to A1 Amsterdam vice versa and to/from A1 Amersfoort will only operate in exceptional circumstances.
* A1 eastbound is signed as U-99 from the reversible lane, because it will typically not serve traffic to Amersfoort.

Botlek Bridge, Rotterdam

The demolition of the old Botlek Bridge in the Port of Rotterdam will start on Saturday. The lift bridge was built in 1955 as the first access to the westward expansion of the Port of Rotterdam.

It was the only crossing until the Botlek Tunnel opened to traffic in 1980. In 2015 a new four lane Botlek Bridge opened to traffic to increase capacity on the A15 corridor.

Here you can see the old Botlek Bridge before the new Botlek Bridge was built.

New Botlek Bridge (the old one is right behind it).

2017 government formation

The government formation will finally be completed in the next week or so.

Parliamentary elections were held on 15 March. It resulted in a fragmented political landscape, the co-governing Labour Party in particular lost a historic amount of seats.

It soon became clear that the centre-right VVD, conservative CDA and liberal D66 would form the core of the new coalition. But they were short of a majority. So they needed a fourth party to join. They first explored a coalition with the greens, but that ultimately failed. They then shifted to centre-left CU, a Christian party.

So after half a year of talks, it seems that an official governing agreement will be published next week.

A lot of stuff has already leaked. Concerning roads;

* a kilometer charge for trucks will be explored.
* the infrastructure fund will receive an additional € 2 billion of funding over the next 3 years (with reportedly much of that going to roads).
* higher traffic fines for severe offenses.

I do not expect major policy changes concerning planned road projects or other road policy such as 130 km/h.

CDA joins the cabinet which may lead to some regional bottlenecks getting funding. The VVD-driven infrastructure policy over the last 7 years put almost all emphasis on hard data: only bottlenecks in the 'traffic jam top 50' got funding. But this means projects in the east would never got funded. They even pulled the plug on the under € 10 million N50 expansion at Kampen, which has seen numerous fatal accidents over the recent years. I'm guessing CDA may be able to get some of those projects back on the priority list, though western/central/southern Netherlands would - rightly so - still get the bulk of motorway project funding.

The coalition would consists of;

* VVD 33 seats (centre-right, classically liberal party)
* CDA 19 seats (centre-right, christian value, conservative party)
* D66 19 seats (centre/centre-left, liberal party)
* CU 5 seats (centre-left, reformed christian party)

This would result in a 76 seat majority - the smallest possible majority, but they could expect support from the SGP on most issues. SGP is an orthodox christian party with 3 seats.

No, even before the elections she revealed she would not be going for a third term.

CDA, could we bring Camiel Eurlings back? He seemed to understand some things :P

Eurlings... Isn't he in jail at this point? IMO Schultz was vastly superior. I'm sorry to see her go. The same applies to Edith Schippers (Minister of Public Health) who was doing a great job. The women really outshone the men in this past cabinet.

Schultz partly got to open a lot of work that Eurlings did. He initiated a lot of red-tape-removal clearing the way for later ministers.

N300 Buitenring Parkstad Limburg

The new N300 regional expressway around Heerlen will be completed 2 years ahead of schedule. It will be completed no later than 31 August 2019. It was originally planned to be completed in 2021.

But much of the new expressway will in fact be completed in the next 6 months, but it won't open entirely to avoid a giant bottleneck at the A76 Nuth interchange.

The A76 Nuth interchange will be the mega turbo roundabout we discussed recently. Land acquisition went much smoother than expected so it can be completed significantly ahead of schedule.

By april 2018, virtually the entire new expressway will be completed, but they won't open all of it until the Nuth interchange can be used, most likely by October 2018. However the actual interchange itself, including the turbo roundabout, will be completed in August 2019.

A27 widening

As part of the A27 widening project between Utrecht and Hilversum, a bike bridge across the motorway was demolished this weekend and they installed a 67 meter long gantry for pine martens.

Botlek Bridge, Rotterdam

The main span of the old 1955 Botlek Bridge has been lifted out by a ship crane.

Botlek Bridge, Rotterdam

Some more photos of the 850 ton main span removal of the old Botlek Bridge:

Botlekbrug (40) by Mark van der Meer, on Flickr

Adieu Botlekbrug! by Mark van der Meer, on Flickr

Adieu Botlekbrug! by Mark van der Meer, on Flickr

On the last photo it looks like the crane ship is tilting dangerously, but the Matador 3 is rated for 1800 tons of lifting capacity. The bridge segment weighs 850 tons. Though the lifting capacity depends on how far the boom extends out.

Rotterdamsebaan, The Hague

A recent aerial photo of the Rotterdamsebaan project in The Hague. This is where the new four lane road will tie into the Ypenburg interchange (A4/A13).

A left free-flow exit from the A13 in too the tunnel looks really easy to create.. Or one that diverges to the right from the exit lanes, bypassing the trafic lights.
