They are really beautiful, but we don't have them here at all.

I'm not surprised, it's typically Dutch. We used to keep our feet dry with these things. Now we have other stuff to do it with I guess that is why you see them a lot around here. I live app. 3 to 4 metres below sealevel.

Go ahead
And when McCain becomes the next US president, I'm afraid I'll live under sea level in a couple of years

Not necessarily, it's still the Netherlands
Anyway, if we can't stop the poles from melting, we are in big trouble and we will all have to move somewhere higher

@Chris: I've tried to learn some Americans how to pronounce "Gasselternijveenschemond" (somewhere in the north of NL), but I didn't succeed. Hopefully they'll do better with Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht.

By the way, we have some pretty stupid place names. In Limburg, there is a town called "Echt". For the ones who don't speak Dutch: "Echt" means "really". There has been a sign on the A2 saying "Brug Echt dicht", meaning that the bridge in Echt is closed. If you literally translate it, it becomes "Bridge really closed"
Haha yes I have posted that once. Was like three or four years ago when that sign was standing there. It's like the ministry of traffic is always joking there by saying the bridge is closed.

According to the motorist association ANWB this mornings peak hours was the 10th busiest ever with 568 kilometers of traffic jam. The Traffic Information Center VID reports 466 kilometers though. Quite a difference they and I can't explain.

Yes, the work on the A2 between Utrecht and Amsterdam goes mighty fast. I was wondering: is there a website with updates for that project?

The coalition party Christian Union (CU) wants to have yet another plan for the A4 Delft - Rotterdam surveyed, a 6 kilometer tunnel with a lake on top of it. Like the available € 665 million isn't enough for these 7 kilometers.

Minister Eurlings reacted that he won't accept another study because they've studied enough since the 1950's on this missing link. They should need a warehouse by now to store all the paperwork collected on this A4 section.

Just do it the Chinese way: first build it, and start talking with environmentalists afterwards. For this section it seems to be the only way it can get realized

That's not really a democracy, Timon. The problem is there isn't a 100% concensus all the time about this road. Most parties agree it has to be build except the far left parties like Green Left (and the Socialist Party, though I'm not sure). Funding is available too. Another problem is that so-called local interests (green parties) take it up court all the time, so every survey has to be redone for little mistakes, which delays it for at least a year usually.

Same thing happened with the A4-widening near Leiden. Even the locals were proponents of the project but there was a little error in the traffic model, so they had to redo the entire environmental impact assessment. They now want to create a law so that assessments don't need to be re-executed, but only slightly changed, speeding up the process of building a road. The A4 is only one example of many road projects that have been delayed for decades now.

Maybe not democratic, but it seems to be the only way that this road will be constructed soon. It has taken too long now. Anyway, I have a question about the A6/A9. Recently there were some updates on this project, and how is it planned now? The entire connection as a tunnel, or only the Naardermeer section?

As far as I know they've decided to upgrade the existing motorways. (A1, A9, A10)

They've ruined that interchange layout because of the construction of the Betuwe freight route.
