Yeah, the big problem is the undercapacity. There are still a few stretches that really need to be constructed, like the A4 in Midden-Delfland and the A6/A9 connection.

The problem with widenings over here is that there are lots of NIMBY's and too much rules. The A2 is actually the only motorway where something is happening. Lots of work to do

Some pics I found in my vault.

1. Typical rural motorway traffic in the Netherlands (A28 near Nieuwleusen).

2. Accident near Wezep on A28.

3. Truck traffic can be crazy as hell around Zwolle.

4. Wrong sign, Groningen must be Gorinchem. Groningen is like 270 kilometers from here.

5. Enjoying congestion on the streets of Zwolle.

6. The A6 runs straight through lake Tjeuke in Friesland.

7. Truck queue at the German border on A1 during Germany's holidays.

8. 70 km/h on a non-urban looking expressway... BOoooring!

9. The Netherlands # 1 export: speed cameras. This has even been spotted in Taiwan.

10. Remember this sign... it means 100 km/h (and not 80)

"Expressways" don't exist in the Netherlands. It's called an "Autoweg", which looks like an expy. There we go again

Nice pics, btw. A typical rural motorway indeed (pic 1)

Judging by the congestion, it looks more like an expressway.

About the hectometre signs: why is it at 300 over here? That motorway itself is hardly 150 kms long. Is it counting from the A50/N50 or sth?

It's counting from A50 indeed, but it would have to start somewhere in Belgium to reach 300+

Some things I photographed on my way from Amersfoort to Zwolle.

1. Traffic jam at interchange Hoevelaken.

2. New electronic signs installed along A28 near Nijkerk.

3. Future exit Amersfoort-Vathorst / Nijkerk-South.

4. Nearly finished. Opens early 2009. Including truck traffic overtaking prohibit.

5. New touristic signage. Arkemheen-Eemland. I doubt if many Dutchmen have heard of it.

6. Overtaking trucks are common along A28 motorway, but not so much of a problem.

7. A somewhat more narrow bridge near the Nijkerk exit.

8. A light tank is being transported.

9. Esso gas station.

10. Detail of exit Strand Nulde.

I'm not sure what they are called in English. I believe the British call it "shoulder running", though I don't think that's a good name for the "spitsstrook" itself, more what happens then. Besides that, it doesn't always happen on the shoulder in the Netherlands, they often construct a "plus lane" on the left. (which is only like half a meter more narrow than normal lanes, why don't construct a normal extra lane, much cheaper than all the electronic and human observation via CCTV).

I use the terms "rushhour lanes" or "peak hour lanes".

The traffic is quite unevenly distributed, though

Yes, that's the major problem with those lanes. Besides trucks, barely nobody uses them.

So you can overtake a traffic jam, like it is done in Italy(but they don't have such lanes... )

Some more pics I took today.

11. This section of the crashbarrier can be removed to close one carriageway for roadworks. It can be done as a 4-0 road construction.

12. I found these crashbarriers a bit low. Notice the new pavement, very black, but the driving lanes had salt on them, creating quite some contrast.

13. They've added Harderwijk here, since the upcoming exit has been changed to Harderwijk-Zuid.

14. Some cyclists on this 1960's overpass.

15. Why not waste some money on stupid art?

16. An early example of a soundbarrier.

17. Double barriers due to the southbound lanes being somewhat higher.

18. Higher position distance sign. Quite unusual.

19. Typical crashbarrier "waving". This one's probably around 45 years old.

20. Notice the 350m acceleration lane. Most people immediatly merge left though, despite their speed being far below the speed of the driving lanes.

21. Wildlife can cross for the next 28 kilometers.

22. A28/E232 reassurance sign.

23. This is no bluffing. Speed traps are common along this section of A28.

24. Big Chevrolet Tahoe.

25. Gas station.

26. It's another Esso gas station.

27. 25,25 m long truck. You don't see them too often.

28. Dirty neglected crashbarrier (Radi's not gonna like this)

29. I don't know what this was. Looks too small for a rest area.

30. Notice the extra left space for correction.
