Not really, they have a bunch of outdated stadiums with poor facilities, pretty low capacities, and not really up to WC standards. Couple this with the issues of political and economic instability, poor infastructure etc etc, and a successful WC bid does not look very likely at all in the near future. But they do want one I believe, although the country has already hosted it 2 times.

Just for you, here is a brief summary of the stadium situation in Mexico:

Estadio Azteca
Capacity: 114,600
Built: 1962. Renovated: 1986
Location: Mexico City

Estadio Olímpico Universitario
Capacity: Somewhere between 63,000 and 73,000
Built: 1952
Loaction: Mexico City
(No roof, poor facilities and a mainly used for athletics)

Estadio Jalisco
Capacity: 56,700
Built: 1960
Location: Guadalajara

I'm not sure if this has been demolished to make way for the new Chivas stadium, or whether the new stadium has been built elsewhere....

Estadio Chivas
Capacity: 45,000
Built: 2006
Location: Guadalajara

Estadio Universitario
Capacity: Somewhere between 42,000 and 52,000
Built: 1967
Location: San Nicolás de los Garza,

Estadio Cuauhtémoc
Capacity: 42,684
Built: 1968
Location: Puebla

Estadio Morelos
Capacity: 38,384
Built: 1989
Location: Morelia

Estadio Luis Pirata Fuente
Capacity: 30,000 - 40,000
Built: 1968
Location: Veracruz

Estadio Corregidora
Capacity: Near 40,000
Built: 1985
Location: Querétaro

Give it to a different nation than somewhere where it has already been.

thanks for that info...is it the norm in south america not to maintain stadia? you'll find many stadia in brazil and argentina that just dont look like they are being looked after..i understand that they are "old" but look elsewhere across the world and u'll see old stadia being upgraded and being looked after...i know mexico isnt south america but it seems like perhaps there just isnt enough funding being provided to look after the various stadia.

Thats taking it way too far down the PC road thats been damaging the WC for me. While the football itself wasnt always great in 2006 I think we saw just how good a WC can be when its held in a nation that truely loves the game.

How many of the stadiums in the Aus bid are going to be Oval? Can anyone really imagine a WC semi or final in the MCG? That is not a football stadium, oval stadiums are not suitable for any football matches let alone world cup games. A bid with 4 or 5 oval stadiums would never win.

My guess would be that final would be held at Stadium Australia or MCG as they are the biggest capacity stadiums. We had Australia vs Uraguay at the MCG and it was excellant. I do not see it being an issue. Nor should FIFA.

How is an oval different to an athletics track? it may be further at half way down the sides, but on the corners are behind the goals an oval is closer to the pitch.

The final always goes to the highest capacity, and in Aus that is the MCG.

For an extra <7000 this years final was held at an athletics tracked stadium. I'm sure that for an extra >17000 the oval MCG would be used over the half rectangle/half oval Telstra Stadium.

And the bid would only have perhaps 4 ovals at most (with 1 or 2 of their seating being moved forward to "soccer mode"). World cups have been held with as many athletics tracks.

It really isn't an issue.

I don't know.

I have realized that the Brazilians haven't had a World Cup in the longest time so I expect them to get one. I really doubt the Australians will get a World Cup in 2014 or 2018.

umm no...In 1982(Spain) and 1990(Italy) the final did NOT go to the largest stadiums. And even in 1994(USA) and 2002(KOREA),there were bigger stadiums available in these countries and were not even used for any games.

The final has gone to the host nations capital city or it's largest stadium.

Im sure the Final venue is determined by the local organising committee(as per guidelines set out by FIFA(70,000++ etc etc) or am I wrong?
