In this last photo of today's update, it appears that the second wing on the right side of the tower is still stuck around 42. That one is already 30+ floors back. I'm wondering why it hasn't moved for what seems like months.

I quote : "together with recent design changes affecting the overall height of the project, means that contractors Besix, Arabtec and Samsung are likely to seek a time extension to accommodate the extra work" To me this means that the client want higher building and that all calculations have to be started from scratch again. Remember that the set backs are to act as a dampening system (due to the fact that they are put as a spiral on the building). My guess is that they stopped the wings erection for a while, so that some studies are made on a higher model, and plans are changed, and soon they'll go back to work. We'll maybe see change in the setback height on the side of the tower, allowing for greater heights. Just my humble guess (and hope). I am also convinced that the rumors about miscalculation could come from the fact that the client wishes to reach a height that the building can't stand. I am positive that design and construction made until now can safely support the building height (700 - 800m) but what is the limit ? Only time will tell. An other clue is (still the same article on dubai life) : "The final height of the tower will indicate what extra time we will be allowed to work with, because the initial programme was for a certain height and the new height is different from the initial height. So there may be an adjustment of timing, but all of this is not clear yet." This to me means (under lines) that they still wish to go as high as they possibly can. So they have to deal with what is already build to calculate the limit they can reach and then continue the tower according to new plans... It would be interesting to carefully observe changes on the construction site that could give us clues about major plan changes to the height of the building. If they substantly increase the height of the building, they will have to face some construction promblems that they'll have to solve first. The challenges i'm thinking off are about concrete pumping to new heights. And the major concern to me is about the cranes. The crane constructor (Favelle Favco) installed drums with 800m cables. I am not saying that they can't install bigger drums and longer cables, but if it is to be seen some heavy maintenance and even design changes on the crane, that would be a faboulous clue to us... This building is a real nightmare to us, as about guesssing height, but it is also so passionating. Not to be to demanding, but this would be a fantastic time to have some details pictures showing the wings, and top of the tower... Love these projects... Sherlock Krys

Those are all good points, Sherlock. Ultimately I think that Emmar will keep building in areas where there is little to no change, although a key to watching any major changes in either the construction timetable or physical changes to equipment or techniques may be able to key us in as you said. Although there is a great drive for maximum height without a doubt, I don't think they'd be foolish enough to compromise the tower's safety and stability beyond what maximums the materials are rated for.
If anything, hopefully the problems (whatever they are) will be artfully solved and the worst we see is a delay in construction to facilitate the new progress. Although I am personally unaware of how many projects in skyscraper history have radically altered their original set of plans while in the middle of construction, it could feasibly be done I presume depending on how much more they're willing to spend on the tower. You can't exactly start from scratch now but I would be curious as to how much the existing structure could be reinforced to withstand the extra height changes (if any is needed at all). As long as people don't get too lost and keep a straight head when it comes to changing the plans (as I'm sure they are), I think it'll be fine. Ultimately it'll be good to see what happens because we are almost certain of having a tower higher than 705 (or maybe 800) meters come out of these changes. There is the alternative of a horrible disaster or something unforseen but I would imagine Emmar NOT wanting to again cause doubt in such an important project and so if they have to delay thiings, then please do by all means. Ultimately everyone wants a record-breaking tower but that does little to help things if integrity and other factors are called into question. Though I know you're speculating a lot on ideas, Sherlock, (as we all are for the most part) thanks for adding to the discussion and hopefully through the sources the thread has, we may be able to find insight to them in the future. |
