i'll stick to hiding in a dark, air-conditioned cave for another month or so...

I wonder if Hong Kong would be the same today if the British hadn't taken control over it.

it would have been a collection of fisher boats, but guangzhou would have been much more developed.

No, but who knows what would've happened. Hong Kong experienced a great deal during the Communist revolution. Had it not been a British colony, and assuming it never broke off and became part of Communist China, then it's likely that Shenzhen and HK would've codeveloped, both probably overshadowed by Guangzhou. The refugees from mainland would've probably flooded into the MUCH smaller Macao, and depending on how Macao handled it, it would've either developed into a huge, ultradense city, or a huge, poverty ridden refugee camp.

I asked the same question last year, lol, you might have more luck asking in the HK forum, or try to find my thread, lol.

And to answer gladisimo as well...

Yes, those are bulls and they are wild bulls.
Yes, you do see the word "WILD" to describe them.
They are the descendants of those bulls used to be petted by man kind for agriculture.
The bulls were left in the wild after the industry collapsed in HK, and the spice has started to live in the wild HK and regenerating after generations and generations.
They are concentrated in the Shing Mun Country park area.
Is it hard to imagine HK actually has some wild life??

pookgai, if you walk in any bookstore in HK now, there are plenty of trails books and maps. I usually find those published by the Land Department and Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department have the highest quality mapping and description, but they are also a little more expensive. If you don't want to spend to much, there are a lot of marked and paved easy hiking trails all over Hong Kong. Check this out: http://www.hkwalkers.net/eng/index.html

I think HK chinese are still the main driving force for HK's achievement today. But it's the British control which prevent us from being ruined by Communism.
