Maybe that's what they intended

A middle finger to Hong Kong Island.

For obvious reasons, Hong Kong's development is a little more haphazard and similar to Western cities. I prefer this type of development to the overly complex and picky Chinese way of planning many of their other cities. Shanghai isn't as bad, but Guangzhou in particular stands out.

Those circle making buildings behind the ICC weren't built to have ICC nearest to the river has it?

I would've thought it was the other way around.

The problem I have with Shanghai is each skyscraper has its own "lot", and every tower has a larger than tower "base". Which might be fine from a skyline point of view, but the layout can't very street friendly at all. Then, they put three supertall towers in the middle, (which are architectural marvels, don't get me wrong), that are all attention grabbers. Personally, I don't think the twisty Shanghai Tower fits with the other two, which are very symmetrical. I was really hoping SOM's design for the tower would be picked. Regardless, I say they should have spread the three towers out further.

Hong Kong is my favorite Chinese skyline currently, followed by Shenzhen, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Beijing.
