Although the investigation is ongoing, TVB news says the 6 workers had heavily loaded the wooden platform with various tools and construction materials before it collapsed. It must have been very heavy with that weight plus the weight of the six workers.

So close to completion too...

So sad. Rest in peace. They were just working for a few days on the job.

I have always been surprised by the seemingly relative safety of construction workers considering all the tall buildings being built.

Construction accidents are not uncommon, but the practices leading to this incident must be investigated.

RIP to the victims and wish them a proper memorial.

Transcript of SLW's remarks on accident at International Commerce Centre
Sunday, September 13, 2009
Government Press Release

Following is the transcript of remarks (English portion) by the Secretary for Labour and Welare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, at a media stand-up after visiting the construction site at International Commerce Centre today (September 13):

Reporter: Will there be an investigation?

Secretary for Labour and Welfare: Certainly, the Labour Department will launch a thorough investigation into this accident. This is a very serious accident and we are very sorry about this. We will make sure that similar accident will not occur in future.

Reporter: Any compensation?

Secretary for Labour and Welfare: Yes, according to the Employees Compensation Ordinance, the maximum statutory compensation would be as high as $1.76 million. But I have discussed with Sun Hung Kai, which is the developer of this building, Mr Kwok has promised me that tomorrow Sun Hung Kai will issue a cheque amounting to a million dollar for each bereaved family, whether they are injured or dead workers. And also they will look after all the funeral expenses, and in the long term, even look after the educational expenses of the children involved. So we are talking about doing everything possible, government and developer, to help the bereaved families. I am going to the hospital now.

Very sad, poor workers. I think the owners should build a commemorative monument for them in front of the building. They deserve it, having worked in this beauty.

Very sad news indeed. Some sort of memorial to them somewhere in the building does seem appropriate. RIP

Yeah but how much is $1mil HK to them? $6 mil is less than the purchase price of a modest flat. But I know they didn't have to do that... a good token gesture. According to TVB news, their children's tuition would be paid in full by SHK as well. But I heard the deceased families can only claim $1.78 mil in compensation (edit: just read hkskyline's post above.. so it is true).... that is really quite a low sum.

Big names move in to towering star
14 September 2009
The Standard

The 118-story International Commerce Centre - at 484 meters Hong Kong's tallest building and No 4 in world rankings - will be completed by February if everything goes according to schedule.

But with construction in three phases, some tenants have already moved in. In fact, more than 90 percent of its 2.5 square million square feet of space has already been leased. Most of that space is accounted for in five office zones, which will be served by 30 passenger lifts. There will also be 14 shuttle lifts to higher zones and two VIP lifts.

Morgan Stanley Asia Pacific moved in with 1,000 staff at the end of 2008 and occupies 16 floors at the bottom of the building. Credit Suisse has also arrived with some of its staff, while Deutsche Bank personnel will be among those from the banking and finance industry joining them early next year.

Other prominent tenants include ABN Amro, China Haidian, EFG Bank, SNP Vite and Hong Kong Mercantile Exchange. EFG is also among those already settled into new offices.

Lo King-wai, the office leasing general manager at the Sun Hung Kai Real Estate Agency, had said previously that EFG was taking space at more than HK$50 per square foot monthly. Luxury hotel Ritz Carlton is taking the top 15 stories.

Yesterday's accident is not expected to have any impact on the pattern of leasing and office moves. "Most of the areas have been leased and the building is popular with international firms," said CB Richard Ellis executive director Alan Lok Ying-ming.

The ICC, a development by Harbour Vantage, is under Harbour Vantage Management - both subsidiaries of Sun Hung Kai Properties. Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates is the design architect, while Ove Arup & Partners Hong Kong is the structural engineer.

The ICC will stand below behind the Burj Dubai (800m), Taipei 101 (509m) and the Shanghai World Financial Center (492m) in the world rankings.
