RIP to those that died.

Let's move on to better things - here's a picture from the bedroom of Wylie Court, a development on Wylie Road.

You can spot IFC and ICC (under construction - older picture obviously)

Similarly from the living room

Not typoon, the accidents was caused by earthquake.
Building industry is high-risk industry. However safety has been improved a lot, the building industry still is one of the most dangerous industry around the world.

Hopefully, developers can take socail responsibilities for any family which lost the one they love.

I'm not trying to be cold blooded, but if there's a memorial in front of any building that has a fatal accident, then we'll have so many memorials everywhere that they would lose their meaning?

Again, this is sad but I'm not sure whether we should have memorials for every fatalities. If, equally, we say we should have a memorial for every traffic accident fatality, I cannot imagine how roads would look like

I agree...construction is, unfortunately, still too dengerous and too many still perish...lets just hope that the most fitting memorial for thesepoor guys will be an even safer construction industry in the future.

I wasn't talking about any enormous monument, just a commemorative plaque.

Ah right I thought you said "build" so I thought you were thinking of something not quite insignificant.

I can't wrap my head around how this tower has way less office space than the old WTC towers did (individually)

It actually has more floor space. But it is mixed use.

ICC - 430,000mē of floor space

1 WTC = 2 WTC = 400,000mē of floor space

Tower dead `may not have - hooked up safety harness'
16 September 2009
The Standard

The six workers who died in Sunday's International Commerce Centre 20-floor plunge were provided with safety harnesses _ but it is unclear if they were hooked to the lifesaving rope, Sun Hung Kai Properties vice chairman and managing director Thomas Kwok Ping- kwong said yesterday.

The company has appointed independent industry consultants to inspect the overall safety of its construction sites, but it is up to the Labour Department and police to investigate the incident, he said.

SHKP's panel of senior management was bombarded with questions at its annual results press conference, held two days after the accident in which six casual workers fell from the 30th floor to the 10th inside an elevator shaft when a working platform collapsed.

Kwok said the most important task is to assist the affected families and to understand their needs before assessing the company's loss, which he estimated as minimal.

The company will take care of the education expenses, up to university level, of the workers' children, including textbooks and private tutorial fees.

Sun Hung Kai Real Estate Agency executive director Victor Lui Ting said the elevator shaft is located in the part of the ICC still under construction and that the incident would not affect the date of completion of the 118-story skyscraper. Yau Tsim Mong police crime squad has launched an investigation.

Secretary for Labour and Welfare Matthew Cheung Kin-chung said he hopes the Labour Department's investigation could be wrapped up in six months, adding the six-member team will investigate the stability of the platform and whether the workers were wearing safety harnesses.

Cheung stressed the government has taken a very serious view on the accident and will step up inspections.

Meanwhile, about 20 relatives, accompanied by the Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims, went to the Kwai Chung Public Mortuary to identify the bodies.

Some became distraught and had to be physically supported while leaving the mortuary.

Association chief executive Chan Kam-hong said some families were unwilling to allow an autopsy on the bodies but eventually gave their consent.

The Democratic Party will write to the Legislative Council panel on manpower to request a special meeting on the accident and the current inspection mechanism.

This afternoon the sun was shining directly on the building through the dark clouds. The cladding really works as a mirror in such a manner you that can hardly look at it.

With the dark clouds mirrored on the building the building really looked amazing. For me it's the first time I prefer it to ICC even of which the cladding looks boring in comparison.
